Wow. We have 3 very good players - no other team can match us with that type of quality and quantity.

Why do you think Chicago's won 2 - and is probably winning their third - Cups with Toews and Kane signed waaaaay below market value?

Because those 2 guys are a cut above our top guy, Max. They have a ton of dep. You think Weise gets top 6 mins over there.

Well...they also have Keith at below market value signed for like 12 years...Hossa signed for 13 years....

But they don't have a goalie....not an elite one at least...

They tanked properly - got Toews and Kane back to back. We were Chuckie and done.

Chicago was a mess for years.....their games weren't even televised at some point.

American teams love the welfare money they get from us...

Chicago can thank St-louis and Pittsburgh for passing on Toews

I thought you felt Toews is overated

Water's wet.

Their depth is created from Kane & Toews being under market value, Hossa & Keith signing those pre-lockout deals. They can afford their depth.

Point is, Chicago's window is closing for their time as a perennial Cup contender this year. They'll contend from time to time, but they're no longer going to be the pre-season favorites going into every year like they have previously.

The Habs' window is 3 more years. Subban's at $9M for 7 more seasons, but Price at $6.5M ends in two seasons and MaxPac at $4.5M ends in three season. Price is going to be the highest paid goalie in the world, I would guess around ~$8.5-9M AAV and Max is going to make between what Patrick Kane & Phil Kessel make, probably around the $8M to $9M range. All in all, we'll go from paying them $20M combined to roughly $27M combined. That's one third of the cap.

Cap will probably be higher in 3 years.

But I agree...people don't realize how fairly cheap we have our top players signed (except Subban)...

Where will Dow Jones be in three years?? You can't foresee what happens 3 years down the road.

That's the Bob Gainey view: Let'S not sign this or that player because we will be in cap-limbo in next few years. In the meantime, other teams sign players left and right and then dump them if cap relief needed.

In the large scheme of things I can't, but I do know that MaxPac & Price won't be on those sweet deals anymore and we'll have to pay them full value. They'll no longer be some of the best bargains in the NHL.

And frankly, that's how you win these days. You can't win with everyone being paid their just values, you need to get players who are underpaid on their contracts. You need ELC players with high impact. You need players signed to long term deals when young so that you can get the best bang for buck possible so that you can create room to acquire depth. And most importantly, you can't have salary cap anchors like Brandon Prust, Lars Eller & Alexei Emelin on your team, players who are grossly overpaid relative to what they bring in return. If Eller made $2M, Prust $1.25M and Emelin $2.5M, they would be paid at what would be roughly their fair value. With the ~$4.25M saved on those three, you have the money to sign or trade for a top-4 d-man or a second line winger.
