Updates and Rumours from around the League

O'Reilly's contract situation was a huge drag on his trade value imo.

That said...RJ is a big step up from O'Reilly, not a small one.

O'Reilly's contract situation and Johansen's are nearly identical.

Johansen is a RFA this year. In order to be a RFA he needs a QO of at least 6 million.
Johansen could be UFA in 2017.
He held out during his last negotiation.

Is that much different than OReilly who had 1 year left on his contract at 6 million and then pending UFA when traded.

Dreger was on the TV and mentioned how Komarov without a doubt can get the Leafs a late 1st rounder. With his recent play i wouldn't doubt it. I was talking to a buddy and he made an interesting comparison when thinking of whether we should move him at his highest value. Justin Abdelkader signed a 7 year deal after a decent season this year as a "heart and soul" type player. Another is one and only David Clarkson signing a stupid contract as one of those guys as well.

I think if we are offered a 1st rounder for Komarov we should move him. His value will likely never be higher. I wouldn't want Komarov when he is looking at a Clarkson/Abdelkader type contract after next season.

Odds of Komorov actually being part of the Leafs when they truly matter are low.

Odds of him having any more value than he has now are even lower.

Contenders will lineup for his skill set, and low financial commitment. Sell, Sell, Sell

It'll be interesting to see who they move. Any pending UFA's are a must move i think.

Winnik, Komarov, Lupul, Bozak, Phaneuf, Polak, Hunwick, Matthias, Spaling, Boyes, Grabner. I'd move them all if i could. Ice a team of AHLers older than 27.

RJ has another year at 4M

Johansen could be UFA in 2017.

2018, with whoever is trading for him (in theory) having a very cheap year of him, and then 2 shots at getting him signed to a 8 year extension after wards. Not the O'Reilly situation at all, where he was signed for 1 yr at 6M, and expiring immediately after that into UFA statu

He held out during his last negotiation.

Yeah, his agent handled that terribly. They were trying to have their cake (6.5M per) and eat it to (2 yr bridge). There's the possibility that he's a tough sign wherever he goes, though from an outsiders standpoint, it seems like he was trying to set or change the market of the bridge deal (which so far has tremendously favoured the organization). In the end, he managed to do that, as bridges like Couture's and Duchene's were cheaper than the one RJ ended up with.

2 years of control, one of them quite cheap (relative to production). Is it "that" much different, no. Is it different enough where it creates value difference between the two/ Yeah.

What's the specific argument that BKerr's making here, anyway?

Is it:

A) If Ryan Johansen is traded, the Blue Jackets will likely not get an player/prospect back with the value of Alex Galchenyuk

Or is it:

B) The Habs could potentially convince Columbus to trade them Johansen without giving up Alex Galchenyuk

If it's argument "A", I'd say he's probably right. I do think that Johansen is a higher value player than Kerr's oft-cited examples, Evander Kane and Ryan O'Reilly. Both because of Johansen's contract/rights status, and because Kane and O'Reilly weren't 6'3", 225lb centers coming off back-to-back seasons of around 30 goals and 70 points. But whether it's Evander Kane, Ryan O'Reilly or Tyler Seguin, impact players are pretty much always traded for a collection of lesser assets these days.

If it's argument "B", that's where he loses me. Outside of Galchenyuk, I don't see any expendable assets in Montreal's possession that are as compelling as any of Tyler Myers, Nikita Zadorov or even Mikhail Grigorenko.

Its argument A

I'm saying Columbus won't get Galchenyuk, and also won't get the other big rumored player Seth Jones. They will get a collection of assets.

So now we see if Jagr decides to decline the invite. And lol at John Scott making it - wonder if the NHL will convince him as well to not go, or if they'll eventually be smart and find a way to not have a scrub get in by fan voting.

Yeah, it makes you wonder what they are doing down there. The guys like Stamkos and Drouin should be the ones you try to keep happy and around. St. Louis also wanted out. Weird stuff.
