Quest for the Stanley ****ing Cup

He is what he is but right now he's a .822 goalie. That can't happen.

Freddie is a career average plus goalie but right now he's no where near how an NHL goalie should perform. Until he backs back to NHL average, we don't stand a chance at even extending the series back to Boston.

yeah but that's what average is dude. sometimes he'll be awesome, but there will always be a correction to bring him back to that .915-.920 zone that is his true level. unfortunately this time it's happening at the worst time of year, end of season and playoffs, but some of that is probably also due to overwork.

And that's not even considering what's happening in those 65+ starts, which is mostly an absolute blizzard of pucks being fired at him.

Freddy is no Toskala, he's a decent goalie.

but if you're looking to him to stand on his head and bail us out of the kind of defensive performance we put on last night, forget it.

he's not that good and never will be. he is what he is.

No goalie was saving us yesterday.

Nobody can stop constant breaks and open shots. This is the NHL. And that line of theirs is one of the best in it.

To me, that early too many men penalty said it all. How does that happen like 5 minutes into a big game? They’ve played without their heads the last two games. I don’t know if it’s Babs’ fault, or they’re just intimidated by Boston and it’s crowd, or what. But they didn’t come to play 60 minutes. They showed flashes, where I’d be like, where was this team all game, but Pastrnak put on an all world performance. It’s not even Bergeron or Marchand - they haven’t really done anything. This one kid is torching us.

Sorry but Bergeron is not underappreciated in any way. Great player, but he gets his balls licked daily. Does SN need to claim he's so underrated after blowing him all week? Ryan Dixon's next article will be about how underrated Toews is.

If he finish the playoff with .915-.920 SV% then I won't blame him even if the Leafs are gone in 4 games.

But if the leafs fall to the Bruins and Freddie finishes with a sub .900 SV%, can you say it is not on him?

If the team plays like it did the last two, definitely not on him.

You can’t be a slave to the numbers, man. The SV% is absolutely and entirely irrelevant in games like the last two, where they’re getting countless breaks and open looks, with zero coverage and ridiculous bad luck.

If anyone blames these two games on the goalies, they should know that they know nothing.

What is this?

How can someone rationally say they value statistics only to turn around and heave judgement on a goalie after 4 games in a playoff series where the forwards and defense allow odd man rush after odd man rush? Where are the players? what have they been doing the last 2 games to not get absolutely shit on by fans and analysts? Complete no show. Where is the highest paid coaching staff? Babcock has been outcoached by Cassidy to this point.

The goalie could and should make a stop but the other team scored 12 goals the last 2 games because the Leafs TEAM was shit.

Babcock didn't pull any punches in the postgame. He made none of these excuses for Andy.

He was asked if pulling him was about the team, and he said he pulled him because he wasn't stopping pucks.

He was told that Andy couldn't be blamed for any of the goals, and he said the goalie's job is to get hit by the puck.

You guys have to learn how to recognize bad goaltending.

I didn't say the other guys did their job and Freddie didn't. (and nobody said that)

But when your goalie is stopping at .822 rate, he is a serious problem on the team that no matter how well the other guys play offensively or defensively, you are simply NOT going to win a series.

Go look it up, when's the last time a NHL team won a series with his goalie averaging .822 (heck, even under .900) in a playoff series in the modern era?

So I'm not excusing the other 22 guys, but when your goalie is .822, that is your first and biggest problem.

Andersen has been shit but definitely hasn’t been their biggest problem so far. That’s just kind of ignoring reality

I don't know how you can watch the last 2 games and come to the conclusion that Andersen is the #1 problem. There has to be a stat out there that will illustrate to anyone watching that leaving a goalie with constant waves of 2 on 1's, 3 on 1's, 3 on 2's. or 1 on 0's is the doing of the team and not the goalie.

Can Andersen make a big stop? I think so. Has he? No. How can we blame the goalie when passing lanes aren't being blocked? Puck battles are being lost? Bodies are being left in front of the net unattended?

Babcock is right that the goalie needs to stop the puck but the last 2 games are not on Andersen. Rielly, Zaitsev, Hainsey. Those are the guys that shit the bed.

The question mark around Andersen was one of the biggest reasons I was against coughing up a lot of assets for a trade piece at the deadline.

The problem is, I don't know if the shitty performance is on Freddy or Babcock or both. How would Freddy look right now if he only played 55-60 games? I suspect a lot better but it's purely speculation.

Two games. Full of clear, open shots.

I’d love my goalie to have a .822 in shootouts.
You gotta be kidding me.

So Toronto only gave up clear, open shots to Boston, but really kept the low % shots to a minimum?

Cause that's the only way you can excuse a .822 SV% from a goalie.

If you watched the games, you wouldn't mention the SV% stat. It's irrelevant and absurd.

Either clear, open, unguarded shots, or fluke bounces. Those do not a save percentage make.
