Not for the price Tavares will fetch. I still hope the habs don't get him

All depends on the price. If he comes in at like 12M, I think it would at least give me enough interest to watch the team the first few games. I'm fine taking the chance that he'll be good for the next 2-3 years at least, and not worry about how god-awful a position they'll be in 5 or 6 years down the road.

As long as Bergevin is still your GM, Weber & Price are still on the team, and the organization is still desperately trying to win now with the current gaping hole they have at the center ice position, they may as well throw a massive seven-year offer at Tavares.

I mean, I don't think there's a chance in hell he gives Montreal any consideration at all, but it's still worth the shot for you guys.

Both the Hawk reporters i follow claim the team is going to make a push for JVR

which is probably more realistic than my batshit Tavares and Carlson theories.

Yep, makes sense. He'd fill the biggest hole we've had in our lineup for the past 25 years and despite the shit-show this year was, at least should push us back to the playoff picture if Price+Weber can stay healthy.

I'd also agree it's a very outside shot at happening, but you gotta try. Even if you overpay a bit, we're screwed anyways in 5-6 years, so what's a little more?

That's the issue with JVR. That contract means he gets a lot more 5 on 5 ice-time. It won't end well.

I think he can be fine 5 on 5 if he's insulated with good linemates that are excellent 2 way guys. Also please note that I said fine, and not good or some other particularly positive adjective.

For the first few years anyway. That contract goes full albatross within a few years.

ppl were talking 10+ for stamkos as well and he came in at.....what? 8.5?

He was only willing to negotiate with one team, and that team was a contender with a strict internal salary structure. Stamkos took a meeting with the Leafs and was allegedly offered 10+ million, and turned it down to go back to his low tax, warm weather, contending team that drafted him.

Had Stamkos embraced the open market, he hits 10.5 easily.

So like, what Toews used to be, and still might be, but also may not be?

Making huge US dollars while paying for everything in Canadian dollars shouldn't be overlooked.

Sure, but prices for most things tend to be higher in Canada.

Price of gas is 2.50 a gallon in Florida right now, 1.35 a litre in Toronto.

According to Expatistan.com here's what grocery prices are:

Florida (Orlando)/Toronto (all prices USD)

1L Milk: .98/2.05
1LB Chicken Breast: 3.90/5.49
500G Cheese: 4.81/8.00

We do have them beat slightly on fresh fruits/veggies, but only slightly. Electronics are more expensive in Canada (about 15%), clothes are about the same (15%), entertainment (sports, theatre, etc) is about 20% more expensive. The list goes on man. So no, even with the exchange rate in the player's favour, their money wouldn't stretch further here. Housing costs in Toronto are more expensive than just about all of the US save for a few ultra premium housing markets.

For example, 3M in Tampa gets you 6,600 sq ft on the ocean.

The same money gets you half the house (no ocean view obviously) in Forest Hill.

That's Stamkos and TB, which is moot. Tavares and NYI though, I'd expect prices in New York to be similar to here in California, where everything is nuts.

Paying over $4 per gallon in LA. In ordinary living expenses, literally nothing is cheap. I just paid $11.50 USD today to treat a client and myself to two tiny cups of ice cream from Eataly. And before you say that's Eataly, a half a cup of frozen yogurt from Yogurtland is $5 or $6 bucks.

$1M gets you a 1400 square foot condo in westside LA. A decent house of around 1900 square feet isn't less than $2.3M. And a "nice" modest house (nothing that would blow anyone away) is around $3M. None of these are in the premium areas like on the water in Malibu where I won't even bother mentioning the exorbitant prices.

I think $10M USD, which is around $13M CAD, is going to go a lot farther in Toronto than in New York or LA. Especially now with the tax reform that doesn't let us deduct our State taxes from Federal income.

Correct.

You shouldn't be using Toews as your matchup guy anyway at this point, it's not how you're going to get the most out of your 10.5 million. JVR on Toews wing could actually work if there was a good motor 2 way RW on the other side.

Like I said, Toronto is more expensive than all but a few super premium US markets. But it has nothing to do with the US dollar going further in the US than it does in Canada. Goods and services are more expensive in Canada than they are most of the US, even when you adjust for difference in currency value.

Sure, Manhattan & Los Angeles are going to be more expensive. It's a short ass list after that though.
