GDT: Canes v. Caps 12/14 7:30

Well, that Ovechkin blast....Darling didn't have a chance. He gets a pass on that one. Holtby getting burned by Martinook is more worrisome.

No question...it’s just amazing to me how often it seems to happen to him, whether or not it’s his fault.

I'm trying to decide if Darling was the sacrificial lamb tonight, or just a victim of circumstance.

But obviously a lot of people had no interest in seeing him play at home again.

I'm wondering what kind of miscommunication occurred to make Vellucci pull Ned in the middle of a shutout if he wasn't actually going to get the call tonight.

And you know... when I started typing this our boys were still ahead by two goals. (polar's word).

PDG in OT? WTF???

Brind’Amour is trying to get fired with these shootout choices...the guy is showing how green behind the ears he really is as a coach. What an idiot. You might as well just let Dundon be the coach, GM, stick boy, trainer, Zamboni Driver and owner. What an embarrassment.

Yes... relying on Brock McGinn to win the game in the shootout. That was going to end well.

Williams, McGinn, WTF?

There's nothing to defend here, Brindy is clueless.

No one can defend Brindy’s shootout lineup with a straight face. That’s a rookie coach trying to get cute by rewarding Team Hands of Feet! If it would have went 10 rounds he had Mrazek, Daniels, Stormy and George Alves lined up.

PDG, Williams and McGinnon in the shoot out— really want to know the reason for those choices. No Aho, Teravainen or Svechnikov in the shoot out— why?! I suspect he will be getting a phone call from Mr. Dundon to explain.

They perform best in shootout practice. He said in the post game presser that aside from Hamilton, they don’t really have a go to guy.

he explained it - he said he goes by the recent shootout practices and who does best there. So it's the "hot hand" idea but based on practices .

I wasn't expecting much out of this game and was happy that we held our own with the Caps, but blowing a 3-goal lead is inexcusable. I'm mystified by the SO lineup, but I'm equally upset about putting Darling in net. Let the young kid play, but leave Darling in Charlotte until he can show that he can put together a string of wins.

Darling's best game as a Cane is the sole highlight here. I have to scratch my head over the shootout sequence. Washington basically exploited our weakness down the middle when they needed to. Part of the problem with the defense is that first forward layer. Guys like Rask, Wallmark, and whoever else we are throwing out there at Center can only get it done up to a point. Washington got more desperate and we had no answer. We didn't completely fold up and cough up the deuce, so i guess thats progress...kinda.

Man they were really aiming for the biggest weakness during the shootout on Mr Five Hole but they just kept missing the barn door. As far as the shootout and getting best in practice, yea, the competitive blood is not really flowing as much as game time so your best players may not have it then. I would be putting my best clutch and most going goal scorers in every time! You can't use E. Stall as the rule to not use your best players.

On a side note it was good to get a point. Another note is it looks like they may be going back to the wide open style they played to begin the year. Maybe the odds will switch in their favor on high scoring games. Hopefully not the other way around. Depends on the D and G.

OK ... far be it from me to defend those shootout choices, but Brindy did say afterwards that they told the guys in the practice sessions that if they scored in those competitions, they'd get to do it in the game. So ... the bad decision was THAT one. That said, maybe Aho, Svech and Turbo could PLEASE start scoring on those things in practice. Please?

Weird game. And that's not the first time that Holtby has melted down in our building this season. He was embarrassingly bad in one of the pre season games too. Not sure what's up in that guy's head sometimes. Of course, I never know what's going on in Darling's head, but I will applaud the guy for working on his 5 Hole since he got banished. He's still a train wreck, but it's a different kind of train wreck. Variety is nice.

Big picture ... hey. You guys wanted goals. They're scoring goals.

Most of our shootout shooters were boring the crap out of Holtby with their lame efforts. That was a pathetic uncreative display of skill except for Dougie Hamilton (go figure, the guy who actually executed a high skilled move scored).
