New Canadian Politics Thread

The beer store is the worst, no doubt. Absolutely should get rid of it completely. Ford is right about that - I'm just saying it looks pretty pathetic when set against firing thousands of people.

LCBO is pretty great, though.

I don't remember the last time I went to the beer store tbh. All the good beer is at the lcbo.

+1

I lived in Ontario for two years recently and think I went to a beer store maybe twice over that period of time. And I drink lots of beer.

LCBO is still annoying. I read an article recently where restaurants in Ontario can't even stock B.C. wine direct, they have to go through the LCBO. They have to jump through all these hoops because the LCBO has to go to the winery and get the stuff, then sell it back to the restaurant. Restaurant ends up having to charge double what you would buy it for at a restaurant in B.C. For wine. from. the. same. country.

There's also the distillery laws. The govenment basically treats you as if you are Al Capone if you try to operate a distillery in Ontario. I went to a bunch of awesome distilleries down in the states. Amazing for tourism and the local communities, and somehow they weren't causing society to unravel at the seams.

Yeah that's weird. All sorts of great craft breweries dotted around the countryside. Not many distilleries.

I do all my take home beer shopping at grocery stores and craft breweries.

Yeah, for consumers, LCBO isn't a bad deal. Sure, people are upset when they close at 6 on Sundays, and aren't open until 1am like other sane places, but on the whole, it's not too bad for regular people. Behind the scenes, I've heard about that before - but not all of that is on the LCBO, I think. A lot of that is that Canada has some pretty whacko inter-provincial trade agreements. I forget what the actual numbers were, but it was only up until a year or two ago that you were legally allowed to carry more than a 6-pack across a provincial border.

But yeah, what the Beer Store has is crazy. Were it a government agency like the LCBO, sure, be my guest. But to me, no private company should have a government-sanctioned monopoly. It's crazy. And if Doug's plan were to push the current rules as far as possible, keep complaining on a daily basis what horrible deal Wynne signed with the Beer store, and set it up so that the minute that the deal expired you could get beer from every Rabba or 7/11 or gas station, that would have made total sense. But the problem with that is that's well after his term, and governments don't do that, they need results now, costs be damned.

Weird...who could have guessed this?

Nik Nanos - Nanos Poll tracking is showing the more Andrew Sheer talks about his policies, the more his numbers go from "unsure" to "negative" - Conservatives worried they may have "peaked" too soon to overtake Justin Trudeau

It's almost like he's a very right wing empty suit who thinks that the way to Canadians hearts is to be not be seen wearing suit as much as possible.

***raises hand***

Btw I'm finally impressed with some lib politicking - the whole "scheer's too weak to stand up to ford" thing is pitch perfect.

Scheer is technically unelectable imo, but we'll see just how badly trudeau has trashed himself.

Doesnt matter really until one of the NDP or Greens collapse and their vote goes Liberal. It matters little how poorly Scheer does, his base is locked in. He's going to get his 33-35 percent. If the vote split on the left goes 30-15-10 Trudeau is cooked.

Elizabeth May is Andrew Scheers best friend right now.

His base doesn't care if he has one or not.

Again, the vote on the left has spintered 30-25-10. Everyone who actually cares about the environment are about to let the one one guy who doesnt give a shit win the election.

Its as Canadian as deciding that the second most prolific goal scorer should not take a penalty shot

It's 30-15-10. Also, the Conservatives are still up about 3 points from the last election, and that's including the PP party still being around 3% in the polls.

Still a lot of time for the polls to shift. I mean, the Libs are down 10 points from last election, the NDP are down 5, and the Greens are definitely not getting all 15% of that gap. The real question is whether the Libs can gain back ~5%. If they can do that, and keep it around 35-35 with the Conservatives, then at worst it's a weak minority for the Conservatives with no logical friend to put them over the top. And if the Libs can actually stay ahead of the Conservatives, then you have to think they can find enough friends in the NDP or Greens to stay on.

With how weak the NDP is right now, I have a hard time believing their vote won't collapse to the Liberals like it usually does when it appears the Conservatives actually have a chance of winning.

I also expect the Federal Conservatives are going to get ****ed hard in Ontario, thanks to Doug Ford. They tried to stop the bleeding by suspending the Legislature until after the election, but it ain't working.

Teachers strike is looming, that will be the last straw. Would be happening right around the election too.

Speaking of numbnuts, he lost his Ontario Supreme Court challenge today trying to have the carbon tax ruled unconstitutional.

I think the lib tv spots are crazy better than the cons' at the moment, but i might be biased.
