2019 Carolina Hurricanes Off Season Thread

Given Andy's commentary on SH ice time---who in our system fits that bill? Bean, no. Priskie, I don't think so. McKeown, maybe. Any chance the leadership has basically told Fleury--show you can play the DeHaan role? I like what we've done, but that perspective feels important.....

Go read what Adam Gold wrote about Faulk. Apparently he's our best defender, and irreplaceable.
Yeah ... no thanks. The poor man has absolutely nothing of value to say about hockey, bless his heart.

Oh, and worth noting ... I'd ignore AG altogether if the time ever comes that the club cuts ties with Jordan Staal. He won't be worth listening to for MONTHS after that inevitably happens.

Look. We've seen Faulk kill penalties PLENTY. He's not gonna get any better at a basic skill this late in his career. Fleury and Bean both got some PK time in Charlotte last year, Priskie played in all situations in college (college, but still ... ) and McKeown is at least competent on the PK. It's not like they HAVE to keep trying to make Faulk something he just isn't ever going to be. He's a one skill defenseman. Always has been. If there's a single reason he was so improved last season it's because Brind'Amour, unlike Peters, just let him be who he is for the most part. Problem being, with Gardiner and Hamilton in the mix ... you don't have nearly the same need for what Faulk can do.

I'm not going to be surprised one bit if we end up hanging onto Faulk as insurance to begin the season if TVR is not ready (and I mean ready) to go.

Next opportunity for trades is the GM-panic period of December and the big decision would be the trade deadline at which point if he's got any role at all they keep him as a self-rental for the playoff push and beyond.

Interestingly, with the Canes signing Gardiner, Faulk is probably the most attractive right-shot D-man "on the market". A GM would be waving that acquisition in front of the fan base to roars of approval: "Well, now we're talking!". The legend of that bomb shot from a few seasons ago lives long out there and precedes him. Nobody's watching us that closely to have seen the decline.

As for the penalty kill, think jeffbear noted that there's no reason for Slavin or Pesce to be seen on either of the PP units. So just put the two back together for the PK unit and have them out there for 1:45+ of it. Fleury and TVR can staff the relief unit.

Fleury almost certainly is the 4th PKer if Faulk is dealt and no Dman is part of the return. Gardiner and Hamilton won't be killing penalties. Fleury should be able to do it.

Friedman is usually a pretty reliable source...doesn't mean anything will happen, but...

Go read when Elliotte Friedman and Sara Civian are writing about Faulk. Apparently, the Canes and Ducks are talking about him.

Keep in mind that deHaan was basically a 3rd pair dman at the end of the season. Surely that’s the least we can expect from Fleury. If he can’t effectively play that role, the PK will be a s**t show.

The Faulk to Anaheim rumor seem to have some legs to it, if the Canes are looking to shed salary with a Faulk move, guys like Henrique and Rakell are likely off the table, I wonder what the Canes are asking for...the Ducks first rounder if it's (outside the lottery zone) to make it a 2020 trifecta of three first rounders...

Cautiously optimistic about Faulk going to Anaheim. I know they were on his no-fly list, but that team is nowhere near as bad as they looked last season. Gibson might be the best goalie in the league, night in and night out, and they've got some good youth to plug in now that they've moved some of the dinosaur bones out of the way. They'd hand him the point on PP1 no questions asked, as well.

Do it man ... do it. You'll look good in burnt orange and brown. Who doesn't?

My adolescence was in the early '70s. The pix on my high school class' Facebook page are a constant reminder of the answer to your question.

Shag carpeting never looked good in those colors, either.

@LukeDeCock: Believe the Hurricanes have a deal in place with Anaheim for Faulk. Anaheim is not listed among his 15 preapproved teams, so it’s in Faulk’s hands now. Hurricanes have had a longstanding interest in Ondrej Kase, would be surprised if he isn’t involved.

Luke says the deal is done but Faulk has to approve since the Ducks aren’t on his approved list. He thinks right shot, right wing Ondrej Kase could be coming back this way. Kase had 11 goals in 30 games last year, 20 goals in 66 games in 17-18 and is in the middle of a 3 year/$7.8 million contract.

I like Kase. He's not a game changer or anything but he's a useful depth forward and he shoots right ... which is something the Canes are lacking up front.

Williams was the only right shot forward last year. Necas will be this year.

I'm also seeing some speculation that Troy Terry might be the return.

Another right-shot RW/C out of University of Denver program and currently with their San Diego Gulls AHL team on the first year of his ELC at age 21.

41 games with 41 points (16-25-41) for them last season.

Faulk traded to a Western Conference team and getting an extension with the Ducks keeps him off a divisional rival or Eastern Conference club fighting for the same playoff spots so that’s a bonus. How about Kase and Terry for Faulk and we call it even!
