GDT #72: 9/4/22 HNIC - 50 in 50

Caufield and Anderson had breakaways, Anderson had the point blank on in front of the net. At least three that could've easily gone in.

I just don't get how the worst team in the league playing its third string goalie coming in cold in the middle of the game holds us to 3 goals in 60 minutes. It's crazy how we don't destroy them every time.

Sure, but that's just about every real chance the Habs had tonight. Goalies stop breakaways and other high danger chances all the time. Money puck has started tracking "xHigh Danger" chances and they tend to have a SV% of .700 or so. 7 out of 10 of the absolute best chances a scorer can get, are stopped by goalies. That's just part of the job description. The Leafs gave up 6 HD chances all night, even if all 6 were these extra high danger chances, stopping 4 of the 6 is actually a slightly below average night at the office for a NHL goalie.

Also, fwiw. The last study I can find specifically done on breakaways, has them at a 25.6% shooting percentage. So a 74.4 sv%, again better than 7 in 10 are stopped (like the one Willy had tonight).

2 on 1's are just slightly over 20%, so a sv% of .796, almost as good of a chance as a breakaway.

I'm just saying, it could've definitely been worse for them, but it also could've been worse for us too (just like that last ridiculous loss against them when we outshot them 51-18 or whatever).

Marner Matthews and JT were fuckin awesome tonight and willy easily coulda scored 3 himself.

Annoying they couldn’t run the score up but they were awesome and their 11m trio all stepped the eff up.

Sure it could have been worse, but it's the nature of the game. You give up chances, goalie stops most of them. The goal is to give up as low a volume of good chances as possible. 6 is pretty fucking low.

The reason the game was close was that Montembeault came in and played really well in relief. It happens.

Tavares 6 goals 5 assists 11 points in his last 9 games, quietly providing some great secondary scoring.

First line production on the second line, just as requested of him.

Florida needs to go on a nice season ending losing skid now so we can overtake them and really position ourselves for playoff success.
