2022-23 Premier League Thread

Congrats to Frank. England's golden midfield both sacked in the same season, but I don't think the turnaround from Frank is going to be the same as the one from Stevie G.
I'm still convinced that Lampard has a proper manager lurking inside. Stevie, not so much. Seriously. Lampard had no say in roster building at Everton and that's 90% of their issue over the last two seasons. That and the toxic environment in general. They needed a more mature set of hands and a more pragmatic approach to building a midfield. Too late on both counts

He might not have been ready for the task yet, but was he going to turn down Chelsea when they came calling after he had played the bulk of his career there? He also can't be blamed for the mess that is Everton. I wouldn't be surprised if he wants to take a break after those two shit shows since I'm sure he's probably not hurting for cash.

He'd be vastly better off dropping back down to the Championship or League 1 if he wants to keep going. IMO, Gerrard was on the right path in Scotland, but took the wrong branch. He screwed up and took a high profile gig instead of one that required some grunt work. Lampard was doing the grunt work at Derby when Abramovich decided to elevate him beyond his level of preparation. You want to coach or manage? Go do the hours like everybody else. Viera didn't know what he was doing when he started, but he was in MLS. That's a great place for Rooney to learn his trade as well.

Well, getting turned down by bigger names was probably a blessing. Dyche is a jerk, but he's a pragmatic manager who won't waste whatever he's got left on that roster.

Buckle up kids, and enjoy the ride. The Premier League has accused Man City of breaching League rules and have referred them to a commission. The alleged violations date back to the 2009-10 season, the year after Sheikh Mansour took over the club. Keep in mind that UEFA banned them from European competition for 2 years in 2011 but the ban was overturned. Will they skate again?

Quite the way to start a Monday. Kind of wish the statement linked to what the rules were instead of just their designation. I feel like they kind of have to make a legit punishment for this otherwise they're basically just saying the rules are meaningless and not only can you break them, you can do it blatantly. If it's just fines instead of at the VERY least point deductions and transfer bans, it will just show that the FA is completely toothless. It's never going to happen, but the thought of them actually being dropped down to the championship or even more hilariously, league 1 makes me a little giddy.

Completely agree. A fine isn’t enough, even if it amounts to the equivalent of 1 year revenue. That’s pocket change. Any points deduction has to be significant enough to drop them down a division. Add in a transfer ban for a few years and we’ll see if they can replenish the team from their academy.

I wonder why the allegations end with the 2017-18 season though? Surely their non-compliance didn’t end then?

Changing the subject, there are multiple reports that Jesse Marsch has been sacked by Leeds. They’re 17th in the table and winless in their last 7 matches. He took over last February and became the first team since 2011 to survive relegation after being in the drop zone on the last day, with a win at Brentford to finish 17th.

Might have just been the time period they were looking at. They also may have gotten up to that year and decided, well this is more than enough.

If I had to guess, I'd be shocked if they drop them from the prem. There has to be a transfer ban at the very least and I could see a point deduction amount that could drop them out of Europe. That would allow them to give them a ruling with real teeth to show there are consequences, but not be a full death sentence.

That would suck but it would also free him up to pursue the US job if he wants. I suspect he's had enough of the English press by now

I agree on the fine. There's really no amount of money you can fine that ownership group that would make it painful enough to deter them from doing it all again. Sheik Mansour's people 100% do not care about the various rules of the leagues in which they own teams.

Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris suffered knee ligament damage late in their win over Man City on Sunday. He’s expected to miss at least 6 weeks. His backup is former Southampton keeper Fraser Forster, who was signed on a free in the summer.

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglu is being linked to that Leeds opening ... which would tick me off on multiple levels. He's a heck of a manager and Celtic will lose him eventually, but how's about letting him stick around for 3 lousy years first?

Southampton sacked manager Nathan Jones and 2 first team coaches. The Yorkshire Post says that Steven Gerard and Jesse Marsch are among the betting favorites to replace him. Southampton is 20th, 4 points from safety and lost at home yesterday to a Wolves team that played the last 63 minutes with 10 men

Sky Sports says that Marsch is “on the verge” of becoming the Southampton manager. They’re at Chelsea this weekend and at…Leeds next weekend.

Well, he's no idiot so I'm presuming that Marsch will negotiate contract protection if they get relegated. Because that team is a mess, have been managed by two successive idiots and it would take a freaking miracle to breathe life into their season.
