Habs 2025 Offseason

Yep. Not as upset as I usually am after we are eliminated as this was unexpected. The fact we could easily have won the series 4-1 gives me hopw.
Habs got killed 5/5 and our top line was terrible defensively -15 in the series

Other than some PP production they were contained

Habs scored 6 fucken goals total in 4 games , we were never in this series or winning it

Meant to post last night ….

It’s been easy lifting until now for HuGo, now the real hard work begins …

TBay showed tremendous promise in 2013, couldn’t take it to the next level for another 7 years.

Make Beliefs were in this exact spot with more top end talent in 2018…

HuGo need to add 3-important assets, all w size for this team to take the next step:
- 2 legit top-6 players including 2C
- top-4 RDman

So…..HuGo essentially need to replicate Bill Zito’s 2021 off-season:

- (Reinhart + Bennett) for 1st round pick + 2nd round pick + Heineken

- (Forsling) for FREE (waivers)

Will find out this summer if players (UFA & those w NTC / NMC clauses) perception about Mtl as a favorable destination given this seasons success / young talent / MSL etc. or if it’s the same old taxes / fan & media glare etc driving unwillingness to sign / waive trade clauses

Good luck to HuGo…

I expect some regression next season - might not make the playoffs - but very good team in two years (like contending for the Atlantic and the East).
79-80 Oilers w 19 yr old Gretzky & Messier + 20yr old Lowe + Moog lost in round 1

80-81 Oilers w add of 19 yr old Fuhr + Coffey, 20yr old Anderson + Kurri won 1 round (sweep of Habs)

81-82 Oilers lost 1st round

Habs don’t have anywhere close to the elite talent of Oilers….

Previous post mentioned TBay & Make Beliefs recent journey - both w significantly more elite talent than Habs at same point

Habs should tank for a chance at McKenna - trade Matheson + Diekembe and bring up prospects to replace Dvorak + Savard + Armia

I look at big, talented guys like Dylan Strome who take many years to really hit their stride. Slaf may not have made giant leaps, offensively year after year so far... but his game has consistently improved.

In his 20-year-old season he scores 50 points and puts up 200 hits. He's shaping up to be a problem for the entire league.
Fully agree. Slaf is still a couple years away from being what he will become. I knew it would take longer than many fans patience.

Protas is 24 and before this season never have a season even close to any of Slaf's seasons.

5v5:
Suzuki 3 GF, 4 GA (62.58% xGF)
Slafkovsky 3 GF, 3 GA (60.01% xGF)
Caufield 3 GF, 5 GA (59.73% xGF)

Together 5v5:
59:58 TOI
95-53 shot attempts (64.19% CF)
41-26 shots on goal (61.19% SF)
43-24 scoring chances (64.18% SCF)
3-3 goals scored (50.0% GF)
5.03 - 2.85 expected goals (63.8% xGF)

Seems not bad.

They’re not tanking next season.

Eye test was more important than the fancy stats , top line didn't produce enough and a -15 won't cut it in any series

This.

To think that we could have won the series on the basis of a couple of bounces is Leafs level delusional thinking. When you're halfway through a must win game and your shot total is 5, you are garbage. No point sugar-coating it. The only way the Habs could have won this series is for the Capitals to choke it away. But they were never winning on merit and they were never winning if the Caps bothered showing up, which they did.

The Habs today still have more in common with the teams below them than the teams in front of them.

The easy part is over , now comes the heavy lifting that can make or break the future and kill your cap .

Need strategic acquisitions at the right number and term . Risk taking is fine but not at the expense of losing draft or prospect capital with only short term gains and nothing for the future

Hugo has mot shown any indication of bandaid or stupid moves as of yet.

I trust they make the right decisions

And unlike Zito, Hughes is not located in a no tax jurisdiction surrounded by palm trees and golf courses.

Yup , needed 3 shutouts to even have a shot at this series . 7 ES goals in 5 games is doomsville

Caps have too much size and grit and it showed
