If you want to put a negative spin on everything, then yeah, you can argue that Mitch doesn't care about the Leafs and only wants money. The info and guesswork is just the outcome of your bias.Well yeah, i tend to be careful with my language. No one knows for sure, but i would suggest my hypothesis of him is much much more likely to be correct than yours. We have enough info and guesswork to know who the Marner's are.
You have this belief that all Toronto kids will do anything to play in Toronto. I dont think this really exists anymore. Most athletes want to get paid and win, they dont really care where. If you want to put a negative spin on everything, then yeah, you can argue that Mitch doesn't care about the Leafs and only wants money. Just like mine is. But I think my take is more reasonable and realistic than yours.
Odds are he's probably leaving, but if he does, that doesn't necessarily validate your theories about him. The Leafs may not bring him back, as already hinted at by Tre's statement that he won't guarantee he's making an offer to Marner and Tavares. We already know he will make an offer to Tavares because Tavares let the cat out of the bag by saying they already discussed and he's confident he's going to return. So that statement was fully directed at Marner.
But there is zero doubt in my mind that Marner wants to come back.
He's from Toronto, has his family there, just got married and has a kid.
He's dreamed his whole life of playing for the Leafs.
He actually got drafted by them and never played for anyone else.
He's already high up some of the franchise records lists.
He has more and makes more off endorsements as a Leaf than literally any other player in the league,
His best friends are on the team and not leaving anytime soon.
The team just had its third best season in its history and the second best playoffs of this core's tenure.
The team can actually pay him more than anyone else based on the 8th year (even if it gives him a lower AAV than he's shooting for).
To dismiss all of this and just think he's all about making $14m instead of $13m or $12m is completely absurd imo. But hold onto your opinion and I'll hold onto mine and let's see what happens. Leafs clearly are leaning towards making a change, but if there ends up being nothing good out there to replace him with, they'll likely find their only smart choice will be to bring him back.
And let me just reiterate. I do believe he wanted $14m before the Florida series and how it ended. Circumstances are different now.
You've focused and based your entire view on the one point about him growing up wanting to be a Leaf. There are several other reasons that I listed. You don't need to agree, but they're mostly all factual and solid bases for wanting to stay on the team. You have this belief that all Toronto kids will do anything to play in Toronto. Mitch is a soft human being, who's been babied his entire career. He seems to have a very big issues being criticized in the spotlight. Im very much expecting him in a non NY American market.
He also knows he can possibly win elsewhere without any of the level of negativity. Every athlete knows this. Toronto is more of a detriment to hockey players these days then a positive. You've focused and based your entire view on the one point about him growing up wanting to be a Leaf. And I don't buy him not being to handle the spotlight. He's played for the Leafs for nearly a decade. He's played in the 4 Nations. He wants the spotlight, just doesn't enjoy the negativity obviously. Winning would change that and make him a legend forever. He knows this.
If he wasn't from Toronto and/or hadn't been a Leaf for so long already, maybe it would matter. That's why a lot of guys don't come as UFAs. But he's already in it and has been doing it since he was 19, so it's not something that would drive him away.He also knows he can possibly win elsewhere without any of the level of negativity. He doesn't enjoy the negativity. But I guarantee that the rest of the good things he has as a Leaf easily and dramatically outweigh whatever shit feelings come from negative commentary. There's nothing in hockey like the Toronto spotlight when the Leafs are doing well. They were one game away from reaching a whole new level of what that could be. He's not suddenly dying to run away now.The dude hired people to defend him on social media. Tell me more about how he enjoys the spotlight
