Until then, I just don’t believe we’ll ever see a scenario where that 8th year is so important to the player and/or acquiring team that real value will be exchanged for it.
At most, maybe someone will cough up a piddly, token return. Like a 3rd or 4th round pick.

They want to land an elite player. They’ll have to pay more than elsewhere with NC state tax and well, it’s Raleigh. They’ll offer $14m. Whether Marner takes it or not is the question.

Eh, it also opens the door for a team that is capped out or near capped out to make more of a hockey trade to clear cap as part of the S&T.
It's not the value of the 8th year that will get value going the other way, but the ability to make a signing have less impact on your cap structure. The original team isn't going to get full value of course, but I could see 50 cents on the dollar.
