Obesity comes with many risks

I don't think the the GLP-1's are simply subtracting that though. That 30 percent reduction is larger than the increased breast cancer risk with obesity. It's higher than the increased risk when you look at the highest risk group there is, post menopausal obese women.

There's something else going on there other than just regulating weight.

but also he’s for sure correct that obesity is a big risk factor for like, everything.

I think though that there’s kind of contempt the general public seem to have or like an underlying suggestion that people who are obese should just simply work harder or else go die that kinda sucks so it’s nice to see suggestions the drug might actually directly affect certain disorders. maybe ppl won’t be such colossal assholes about it.

also it’d just be pretty fucking cool, science and medicine can be awesome.

Yup.

But it really does seem like two things are true at once

1) Being at a healthy weight >>>> not, for all cause mortality and these drugs are incredible at that.
2) GLP drugs have significant health advantages for nearly everyone and provide significant additional benefits to even people who are at a healthy weight. Obviously more benefit to people at an unhealthy weight, but the benefits across multiple systems (heart/cardio, blood sugar, kidney, brain, and now apparently various cancers) isn't just connected to the weight loss, there's additional direct mechanisms impacting all of those systems in addition to the benefit of weight loss.

There's already some evidence of longevity benefits that can't be explained by normal weight as well. We're early (but not that early) into the game here, but it's looking about as close to being a "wonder drug" as has ever been produced.

Much of the anger comes from gym bros who have always been normal weight and thus, have no calves. When they see our husky bros with big calves, they get mad and order a new pair of jogging pants to wear at the gym.
