2026 Hurricanes Off Season Thread

I think it was just the corporate accounts and the few individuals with suites. Maybe they invited a few others, but that was what my rep hinted at when I talked to him a few weeks ago.
Yeah, my friends’ rep said Founders and those spending $30k per season.

The rest of us riff raff will be later in the summer.

If anyone hears about any local Cup meet and greets in some local areas later this summer...I heard Apex might be on the list, please keep us folks in here abreast of the news.

No updates from Phil Pritchard since Carrier’s day. But Jackson Blake will have it on July 30 in Minnesota according to Eden Prairie High School.

Interesting. I wonder if they want to try him at the AHL level next season. Hakansson spent a lot of time last year playing youth international tourneys but he did play a chunk of games in the Swedish second level of pro hockey too.

There is continuing chatter about the Canes interest in Detroit RFA Simon Edvinsson and our potential willingness to throw an "over the top" offer sheet at him (ie over $10 million AAV).

The Red Wings have plenty of cap space to match anything the Canes (or anyone else) might offer, but if the Canes are going to shoot that shot and Edvinsson is willing, his AAV number will be very very high.

Edvinsson can get at $10 million+ AAV because he is offer sheet eligible and is really really good. He can leverage that, and unless he is absolutely adamant that he does not want to leave Detroit, his agent should be out there working all of the teams that could offer him massive bucks.

Nikishin's cannot negotiate an NHL deal with anyone except the Canes at the moment. His only leverage is the threat that he holds out or returns to Russia. He also only has 1 NHL season under his belt, a history of concussions, and he is a year and half older than Edvinsson.

I would rather have Edvinsson than Nikishin if that was the choice to be made. Edvinsson is massive out there, has a very long reach and freakish speed for someone that large. Nikishin probably has more offensive upside.

Detroit I'm sure doesn't want to have Edvinsson get a $10 million+ AAV, but unless Edvinsson is 100% beholden to Detroit, I think they are going to be forced to pay him that because of an offer sheet or threat of an offer sheet. This isn't Pavel Mintyukov (4 years $7.2 million AAV), Edvinsson's size and defensive game put him way ahead of Mintyukov.

So, if Edvinsson is really *that* good, Day-twa needs to get him signed to that right now because I'm sure this will be a bargain price for him in a few years. Good to great players will *never* get cheaper than what they are right now until they are way past their expiration date.

I agree 100%, Edvinsson to me is the much better defenseman than Nikishin and that guy might have top pairing written all over him for years to come, Boom to me is a fine second pairing D and a very good player but if you wanted one over the other it has to be Edvinsson every time. Whether Detroit likes it or not, the current market rate is probably going to hit close to $10 million for that player...offer sheet or not on that guy, he and the agent should sit and wait it out right now. I still see Boom bridged at something between a $6 and $8 million AAV if he is staying in Carolina for another year or two.

He played more games in Elitserien than Allsvenskan, 31 games to 18 games so he probably could handle the AHL. I would say let him stay up north in Luleå for one more season. It is good for Stockholmkids to get grounded properly up there in Norrland.

Yeah, I think Nikishin is probably a 50 point player pretty soon. As soon as next season, depending on PP usage. But in the D zone, I’m not sure he’s really got what it takes to actually play Carolina’s system, so he either still got to be sheltered or he needs a partner to prop him up. And by “what it takes,” I’m talking mentality more than anything else. Some guys just aren’t cut out for what you need to do to carry a pairing in a man to man system and he was either very slow on the uptake or just not willing to get the switching down … even late in the season. I honestly think Niki will bloom quickly if he can get to a zone system team that’s got PP time to give him. That ain’t here, but it also ain’t with those teams that play a hybrid system either. And increasingly, there’s a lot of those.

I’ve said it before, but I think Edvinsson is a lot like Miller. IF he’s willing to play the system, them he’s a plug and play guy and then whatever offensive upside you can get, you get. He’s got 179 NHL games under his belt and has really matured in the D zone and he makes a snappy first pass. He’s got the big shot, which takes too long to unfold, but his wheels are flat out impressive. Again, VERY similar to Miller to my eyes. The cautious soft zone they play in Detroit doesn’t really let him show his stuff, and he’s got the makeup to play a more aggressive game. Again, IF you’re convinced there’s buy in, then I think you’d have a guy you can lean on for good run. Is that worth $10 million AAV and the draft picks it would take to get him? No idea. Would I call them and offer a swap for Nikishin? Abso-freaking-lutely.

A little more detail in connection with the release of the schedule from the Triangle Business Journal, including notes about price increases...

The thing that caught my attention is that the arena's hockey capacity is expected to go from 18,636 to "around 19,714." That would give the Lenny the third highest capacity in the league!

There have been some snippets here and there. Pritchard posted pictures on X of Paul Schonfelder with the Cup in Ottawa on July 11 (filled with ice cream, his daughter's request apparently). that was prior to the Carrier pics.

The NJ Bergen Record newspaper had an article yesterday with Bill Burniston showing off the Cup at the Wood-Ridge Fire Dept in Bergen County (article behind a firewall). There are LOTS of pictures you can see though of Billy and the Cup in NJ at the Parkwood Deli and outside the Fire Dept here:

The Canes re-signed forward Victor Neuchev to a 1 year, 2 way deal, $850k/$90k. He had 4 goals, 5 assists in 30 games for the Wolves last season.

Yeah, Neuchev is AHL depth and they’ll need a few more of those guys before camps start. IIRC they only have 8 or 9 forwards for Chicago, depending how they deal with Jarvis’ absence to start the season. They need several guys to fill those gaps, and they’re really short on centers if Ryabkin does end up going back to Russia. Look for some AHL vets to hit the roster pretty soon.
