2026-27 Schedule

There is a brutal 7 games in 11 days stretch in January with lots of travel. Other than that, the rest of the schedule ain’t too bad

I asked AI for a second opinion:

The challenging parts
  • Opening month is difficult. Starting with Toronto, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Buffalo, then Winnipeg, St. Louis, Dallas, and Carolina isn’t an easy way to begin the season.
  • February is compressed because of the Olympic break. The Canadiens play only a handful of games before the break, then have to jump right back into games against teams like Los Angeles and Dallas.
Me: Olympic Break?

Yes. The 2026–27 NHL season includes a break for the 2026 Winter Olympics.

The NHL, NHLPA, IIHF, and IOC have agreed to send NHL players to the 2026 Milan–Cortina Winter Olympics, so the league schedule pauses to allow players to participate.

Canada gets a redo? Sweet

Looking at Habs BTB schedule in more detail:

- Oct (1) - travel Buf to Wash
- Nov (1) - travel NJD to Car
- Dec (2)
  • travel Buf to Minny (1 hr time zone)
  • Home
- Jan (2)
  • Mtl to Nash (1 hr time zone)
  • Buf to Wash
- Feb (1) - at home
- Mar (2) -
  • NYI to Mtl
  • Home
Evenly distributed over season, only 2times do they take flights more than 1-2 hrs, both to Midwest (1hr time difference which is nothing)

Can’t ask for better schedule… barring any major injuries, no reason Habs can’t lockup a playoff spot by end of March

Should top 110pts regular season & be rested (relatively speaking) for playoffs

Easier schedule especially distribution of rest between GP from Oct - Dec = buys HuGo time to wait out teams who potentially fall out of the race by US Thanksgiving opening up potential buy opportunities.

Assumes Habs actually capitalize on silver platter schedule they’ve been handed - and no reason not to believe they will given pre-Jan tends to be pond hockey level intensity

2027 has a stacked and deep UFA class, only the very elite will get resigned IMO (Makar, Hughes)

What happens w Robertson should he go arbitration route? Will TBay sign 35 yr old Kucherov longterm? Etc

Kuch will be 34 when his contract expires

Hockey players dont have balls contract wise so all will re-sign

Nothing to do with having the stones to wait it out

The economics of the game makes it easier to ink now and secure your families for life

This isnt the NFL or the NBA where a mediocre QB gets 30 mil but put up a better year and your hitting 50 +

A good player exiting his ELC can have a 100 mil difference over a contract with a breakout year in the NBA , hockey is not in the same stratosphere.

Players in the Beniers or Slaf tier inked big money and term when both didnt produce much and had whispers of bust

Why wait and hope for more when at 29 you have another huge payday if your still good

Last year all the stars inked because they could get the 8th year and take them into their later thirties when decline sets in

Nobody knows the future just like hundreds of millions were lost due to covid and some players never got their final bag .

Get your security when you can and dont worry about maybe leaving money on the table and risk injury or poor performance
