you guys crushed it getting everyone signed before the big bump. probably saved enough to keep/add at least one probably two excellent players you otherwise wouldn't have.

The players deserve at least half the credit. Demi signed a few months ago. Hutson last year. Even then the rising cap was obvious.

All parties including the Habs GM acknowledged money was left on the table in order to improve the roster.

The pressure now shifts to Kent Hughes. If he fucks it up, he’ll be facing a mutiny
 
He had a weird year. He was shooting like 50% from Jan 31 - end of Dec and then almost 0% in the last few months. He has a good enough shot to get hot like that at times. I don't think the rest of his game is good enough to expect much growth beyond that, but I don't think betting on him to be a 3c is a crazy bet. They better hope it happens tho, because if this was just one fluke year and he is more of a 20-25 point guy, the contract will age poorly.

Theres just not much upside to it, with a small amount of risk. If I'm Boston I would have preferred to go shorter and give minten another year to prove that he's a 3c, I don't think his aav was at risk of going up much.

Yeah but this mentality really takes a hit when the whole league isn't doing it anymore. Those guys were dumb to sign for that little. You're right that it could make for some unhappy players if the team success doesn't come right away.

I don’t think they were “dumb”

They/their agents are on the record, basically saying they’re taking a risk that taking less will lead to Cups.

If it doesn’t work, they’ve got another huge pay day coming in their late 20s

yeah but they didn't take $1m salaries. They thought they were forgoing a certain amount of salary, but were probably kinda 'dumb' about how much they were actually sacrificing.
 
I don’t care about anything else. Giving $7.2m long term to Minten after one 35 point season where he was also a ghost in the playoffs is not a smart move. They have no clue if he’s even going to replicate this, not to mention become a 50 or 60 point player. There was no reason to rush into it.

Contract is a steal if he becomes an elite two way 50-60 point player. This contract is market value for an average 3c, so he just has to become that, which I agree isn't a lock, even though he was that last year.

Heh.. we've heard it from both sides on contracts.\

Wait until a conatract year and overpay? They should've signed them earlier.

Overpay a little to get term and good value later on? They should have waited.

I don’t know this for sure and I’m too lazy to ask Claude, but if you sign all your players to perfectly fair deals, won’t you end up with a perfectly average team?

I prefer getting ahead of things on players like the Habs signed, Hutson and Demidov types. Hell, even the Leafs with knies. This player just had an outlier year, nothing in his prospect profile showed that he can produce at a 30 point rate in the NHL both now and in the future. Yet he did. So imo let's see it again before we blow our load on him, because the odds of him being anything more than a 30-40 point guy are quite low. So if he does it again, his aav won't be much different than this.

But then again, for the Bruins to do this, they must believe there's a reasonable chance he's an elite two way 2c in the end. In which case, great deal! We'll see if they're right!
