May 18 is a day filled with a sense of foreboding. 5/18/1980 is the day that Mount St Helens blew its top *and* the day that Ian Curtis of Joy Division hanged himself. I believe that the two events are wholly unrelated, but hey, maybe Mr Curtis was a big fan of that mountain as it was. Then, in 2017 Chris Cornell lost his battle to his extreme depression (though, there is controversy over that. Maybe he accidentally OD'd?) But on the brighter side of the day, DEVO's Mark Mothersbaugh was born on this day. Take *that* Mount St Helens!

Kyle Busch died. He was 41. His family released a statement earlier today that he was experiencing a severe illness that required hospitalization and he was undergoing treatment.

Yeah … condolences to the Busch family and his fans. That’s just such a wild sequence of events for a pro athlete to go from having some sinu issues in a race on May 10th to winning a truck race on May 14th to testing for the Coca-Cola this week and then being hospitalized and dying fairly suddenly on the 20th.

Yea, they said he was in the race simulator in Charlotte and became unconscious. They took him to the hospital and he was gone soon after. Pretty crazy
Weirdly, NC State has already named their new baseball coach … which means that Boo Corrigan must have been at work getting this lined up for weeks. They named long time associate coach Chris Hart to the position. He’s been at State with Elliott for over 20 years, starting as a hitting instructor and eventually taking over as associate and lead recruiter. The last time State was in the College World Series, Hart was named national assistant of the year by Baseball America. He’s the next best thing to having a younger Elliott Avent take over for … himself.
