Playoff GDT: Round 3, Game 5 Canes v. Habs 5/29 8:00

I’ll admit. I cried a little during Anderson’s post game interview. What a job he did under the circumstances tonight
Most players will tell you their agent is as close as immediate family in your life! For Freddy to have all of that on his plate and still be able to dial in like that on the biggest stage is unbelievable. His first trip to the Cup Finals and all the stuff with his agent to deal with…no words. 12-1 in the playoffs with some ridiculous GAA and save percentage…

I noticed that graphic they put up on TV last night with Freddy being one of 4 goalies with most playoff appearances and no cup finals. 3 of the 4 were Maple Leafs.

Any info on ticket prices for game 5?
Initial secondary market prices started at $750 out of the gate…resellers. The league grabs a shitload of tickets for the Finals so pickings will probably be slim, I’m scouring all kinds of different sources I know to try and buy at least one game.

Congrats on the win. That's a helluva a team you have there and maybe the best prepared and well coached team I can recall seeing.

I posted this on the Leafs board and figured it sums things up quite well for me so I'll include it in this post.

Losing like that definitely sucked. I have some excuses for why it was as ugly as it was... two 7 games series and playing against a rested team certainly didn't help. I don't believe the collection of players on the Canes outclasses the Habs by so much that we couldn't compete with them. However, they're just a considerably better team. They are so well coached and well prepared. Every single player is fully committed and is relentless on the forecheck and backcheck.

On top of all that, St. Louis refused to even try to make any adjustments or lineup changes. First, I'm not delusional enough to believe that there was anything that he could have don't that would have made us win. However, it's unforgivable to not even try. The team is fatigued from playing too much hockey and at the very least you don't swap out a few of the bottom guys for some fresh legs? Dobes certainly wasn't the problem, not by a long shot, but you never pull him, no matter how bad the score gets... maybe even as a wakeup call to the rest of the team? Nothing?

We were forechecked and backchecked into the ground, and I never saw any evidence of a different approach. Again, I don't see any way that we could have won that series, but I'm not getting paid millions to figure that out. The guy who is getting paid millions to figure it out didn't even try to.

You’ve come to the right place if you want to find people who know just how badly last night and this series sucked for you guys. Hell, we’ve lived this nightmare twice in three years, so if you’re ever tempted to think it couldn’t get any worse … don’t. And one thing that should be encouraging about your complaints about the coaching is that young coaches that are hungry to win learn and adapt. The old guys? Hardly ever. Rod figured a LOT of stuff out, even with the same coaching staff that Canes fans used to assume would need upgrading at some point. The people who look at the Hurricanes play now and say that it’s the same thing Rod was always doing either don’t know what they’re talking about or don’t care enough to take an actual look beyond their assumptions. St Louis is cut from the same cloth and its early days in his run yet.

Thanks for your post. You and Habsy are regular contributors to this forum and always provide gracious, inciteful comments. Before the game, I talked to a guy who drove from Montreal to watch this game - tried to speak a little bit of French - and then we had a nice chat in English. I'm sure this wasn't a pleasant series for him or for you, but the future looks bright for MTL.

Habsy reserves his inciteful comments for the Leafs forum.

I like to spar with both of those two because they are solid hockey fans and people, I enjoy the banter and that’s part of the fun a playoff series! Good things ahead for the Habs, and a top notch atmosphere at the Bell Centre for every playoff game! Tres Bien all around for your run!

It looked to me like two things happened here. One was the Habs were pretty much out of gas and could not keep up with Carolina's 4 line attack. The other was the five hole of Dobus is his weakness. I heard an interview after game one, and I forget who mentioned it, but they said something about how odd it was that this goalie does not keep his stick in front of him on the ice. This last game was all five hole hunting. It worked.
Montreal has a good young team but was no match for the 4 line Canes. That division is crazy tough.

Good job boys! No, let's continue to do the one shift at a time mentality which seems like a special gift only winners can emulate.
Go Canes!

I’ll do you one better. Remember 2009? We won the first two rounds in 7 games each in crazy dramatic fashion both times (lookin’ at you Scotty Walker) only to get wiped out in the ECF. So, yeah, we know how the Habs fans feel.
