2018-2019 Montreal Canadiens

Trade Max for RoR, sign Stastny and de Haan.

Drouin - Stastny - Gallagher
Domi - O'Reilly - Byron
Lehkonen - Danault - Scherbak
Shaw - JDLR - Hudon

de Haan - Weber
Alzner - Petry
Mete -Juulsen
Reilly
Schlemko

Price
Niemi

De Haan strikes me as another Alzner.

We didn't qualify Daniel Carr

They had to qualify McCarron, otherwise Bergevin and Timmins look even more idiotic as that would be another wasted first round pick. McCarron is pretty much useless but when you have two incompetent shitheads fighting to keep the jobs they aren't qualified for this is what happens.

Yep, however I think this will be his last contract if he accepts. They have a lot of draft picks and only a limited # of allowed contracts.

They can save face if they trade him for another AHLer, with hometown appeal. Like maybe Dominic Turgeon? Send McCarron back to Michigan.

Blow the team to bits.
Trade Weber to the Leafs.
Trade Price to the Blues.
Trade Pax to anyone.
Trade some more guys.
Don't sign any old new guys.
Ice an ECHL team for 2 more years and off we go.

Being an awful team doesn’t guarantee anything...you can still be competitive while rebuilding.

Sign DD for a one year 10 million deal, same with Plekanec

You trade your vets and pick up salary in the process . The mission is to pick up 1-3 year term players that teams want to dump , and we get the prospects/picks / or young players in return.

By the time we improve with our own youth those contracts are off the books.

Not if you want a top 5 pick. It's one thing if you have smart asset management, but when you don't and you aren't getting high draft picks you can forget rebuild. You are basically doing what every other middling team is doing and what we've been doing for 25 years. How many stanley cup finals has that led to recently, 0/3/5/8 ? Guess which one.

Is a top-5 pick an absolute must though? Had the Habs drafted Theodore (2013), Point (2014), Aho (2015) at their given draft positions in round 1-3. How much improved would the team be?

It’s more important to be competent at recognizing talent than draft position. Lots of top-5 non-1st overall picks flounder.
