2016-2017 Defense

Chip specifically noted it was a 1 way contract and the Canes press release said nothing about a 2 way deal (they almost always do if it is a 2way).

If that's the case then next season looks to be a full blown white towel waving, "were cheap as ever" statement to the fans and the opposition. Jordan is a stretch as a capable defenseman in Charlotte, a one-way deal on the big club is one of the funniest jokes of a contract decisions of all-time based on his play with the Canes in the past, he has done NOTHING to warrant a one-way deal ever. Part of me still is hoping Chip got his facts wrong.

Jordan is in our top 7 now and is not going back to the minors this coming season I'm sad to say.

And I'm sorry, but that's just unacceptable.

The guy has NEVER looked like even a fringe NHL player in an actual NHL game on NHL ice. I really couldn't care less that he looked moderately less useless in the Worlds ... on big ice, playing under IIHF rules. Or that he's a "real stud in the A."

Our D is a thing of epic suckatude and we sign this guy to a one-way deal ... again. I'm out. This is nuts.

Pretty certain whatever app it was said two-way, but don't see anything other than 1 year for $625k on Canes or NHL.

My eyes always did suck and maybe they are seeing things they want to see now.

Good thing I'm not spending lots of time in bars any more.

This was one of my fears. We might be entering a cycle where because of crappy teams and horrible attendance Ronnie is going to be pressured to, at least in the short term, build a team on the cheap while we wait for our draft picks and young players to develop. Rather than spending a lot of money knowing that this team is not going to be a contender until our kids develop and are ready, we are going to spend as little as possible under the guise of 'we are going to lose anyway, why waste money?' Once Ronnie and management feel that the team is close enough to compete again payroll will rise again.

The other possible explanation is that Ronnie and crew have no idea that Jordan is terrible and really think he's NHL material. I'm not sure which is worse, but both are painful to think about.

Here's the thing though.

You don't HAVE to re-sign guys who have already proven to suck to "get by on the cheap." We've already showed one alternate method by signing a North American playing in Europe. Guess what? He ain't the only guy over there who might be worth a look. And guess what? Other clubs have marginal D-men in their systems, most of whom could be obtained on the cheap ... some of whom will be cut loose ahead of camp. Whadda you bet there's at least ONE out there who's better than Michal Freaking JorDAN?

This is the same crap we've seen for years. Oh .... these guys are the best we have, we'll just have to figure it out because we have no money. Then make some trades, make some waiver claims, shake the trees in Europe and the KHL (where the money has dried up in case nobody noticed). Don't just keep re-signing guys who have proven not to be able to play.

Remember all the screwy crap JR tried when the team first got here? Yeah, a lot of it was dumb (like offer sheet for Federov for example) but it showed a desperation to improve and an acknowledgment that improvement was needed. Where the living heck has that desperation gone? WE haven't seen it in nearly a decade. Just caution ... and annual requests for patience.

I've run out of that.

Nope. The app announcement says: "His Iceness is back: Canes agree to terms with Michal Jordan on one-year contract." The correspinding article says he's geting $625,000 for the 2015-16 season. Nothing says two way and given salary, I'm guessing it is a one-wy deal.

Welcome back Derek Joslin!

I bet my next paycheck that there IS.

Agree JB, the more I think about this, it shows no commitment other than status quo. Which as you outlined is just plain dumb seeing as we could have gotten any number of other defenseman who are better for more or less the same squeeze but at least joining us FRESH and motivated...

I've run out of that.

You could do a quick google search and find 20 to 30 defensemen better than Jordan in the AHL, Europe and at the bottom of the UFA trash heap that would kill for a one-way NHL contract!

To use a roster spot and waste a one-way contract on a guy that is marginal AHL fodder is just plain stupid.

Anyone else notice the title of this thread is 2016-17 Defense? yet, we are talking about 2015-16 defense...

Because it seems fairly obvious that we're going to have pretty much the same group back .... may God have mercy on us all.

We were talking about the 16-17 defense for a fair amount of this thread, I'm probably one of the biggest OT offenders. Its fair to talk about the 15-16 defense in that context since some of what should be the 16-17 D might be rushed into action this coming season.
