2020 Canes Offseason Thread

We skipped the sale this year, just too much else to do. It took you 2 hours just to get in the door?

I still have a very hard time envisioning Rod Brind'Amour and Patrik Laine co-existing. Add to that the amount of assets to acquire Laine, and the the amount of cash required to pay Laine with him being a serious defensive liability out there? I don't see that as a Canes type of move.

Hmm, I had RSVP'd for it, but then I guess half-forgot, half-purposely skipped the sale this year.... I usually do go and pick up a few pieces of basically new gear to play in... I currently use a pair of Skinner's skates, a Stempniak stick, Lindy's gloves, etc..

Ya, a Laine move sounds like something Waddell might do if he forgot who his coach was.

arrived at 9 , got inside around 10. Took an hour to find stuff and check out. At 11 there was no line to get in. Should be plenty of stuff tomorrow . Not everything was on sale. Some stuff was normal priced.

Laine would be worth a poke if you didn't have to sell the farm to pay for the guy, but you will, so ... meh.

one of the junior Canes teams had a big problem with COVID , half the team had it. And the kids who were not positive went to a tourney and spread it. Not good

To clarify, it’s the Jr. Hurricanes junior hockey team. It‘s not the youth teams, it’s the old Carolina Eagles organization. The Hurricanes allow them to use the name but provide no support. The upper levels of the league are not sanctioned by USA Hockey, they wanted the same Tier II status as the North American Hockey League but were denied. The US Hockey League is the only Tier I league sanction by USA Hockey.

Yeah ... we've got one of the families in my neighborhood as well. I haven't seen them out and about to ask how things are going.

It seems pretty obvious that Tripp has embraced the Dundon idea of self-promotion and selling (yourself) to supplement your Canes salary. Tripp is going hard with the podcast and merchandise--flooding my Canes twitter list with name dropping self-promotional posts on a constant basis. Maybe Forslund was ready to go there...although he has the catch phrases to make a mint

Soo.....if it really was just Fleury and a 2nd (would have to be a 2021 2nd) from Vegas for a 7th round pick with Vegas retaining half of his salary and cap hit (leaving the Canes on the hook for a cap hit of $3.5 million for each of 2 seasons plus salaries of $3.25 million and $3 million), would that interest anyone here? If that was a 1st round pick from Vegas and not a 2nd? A 1st and a 2nd from Vegas?

Note that this also potentially could be a 3 team deal where the Canes are just buying draft picks for eating cap hit and salary. ie Fleury would just pass through the Canes along with draft picks from Vegas, the Canes would retain half of his cap hit and salary, and then he would actually end up playing elsewhere. If that is the case then I definitely would want a 1st round pick at a minimum. That would be another purchase of picks by the Canes.

The money and cap hit for M.A. Fleury seems doable here based on what you laid out CMal, it would be interesting then to see what the Canes could flip Reimer for on the open market when you consider that his salary only has one year left at pretty close to the league minimum with the bonuses already paid. If you got a second round pick from Vegas and then were able to secure a young prospect or another second round pick for Reimer...then you pretty much have added two solid assets or early round draft picks and a veteran, Cup winning goalie on a cap friendly and money friendly terms to upgrade your goaltending for basically the trade acquisition cost of Scott Darling...that to me seems like some tidy housekeeping to shore up a need. When it comes to a playoff tested goalie, I am taking Fleury over Reimer every day of the week if I only had a choice of one over the other! I'm not so sure Vegas would be willing to part with a 2021 first rounder as easily as the Leafs did with Marleau, but maybe they just look at their first rounder as a 30th overall pick anyhow with a great team in place for next season, which I guess is almost like trading a second round pick on a shitty team.

I updated my post....its possible the Canes would not necessarily be MAFs final destination, with the Canes buying draft picks from Vegas and eating half of MAFs cap hit and salary in return as part of a 3 team deal.

Apparently Vegas is highly motivated to get out of that cap hit and are willing to use draft pick capital to get completely out from under that contract. If the Canes are just a dumping ground for half of MAF's contract then I definitely want a 1st round pick and Waddell is right to ask for a 2021 2nd round pick as well.

Anyhow, if any of this is true, then the Canes apparently are willing to purchase draft picks like they did with the Marleau deal last season. I appreciate Dundon's willingness to spend and creative way the Canes are looking to obtain draft capital.

I’m leery of this one though. We’d be eating 2 years of dead money, the 2nd of which is the year Semin’s contract finally comes off but that coincides with the first year of Svech and (hopefully) Hamilton’s new contracts. I don’t think Waddell wants to hamstring his cap this far out. There are only 10 players under contract for 2021-22, 6 forwards, 4 dmen, 0 goalies. Yes, there is currently $32 million available. But that’s not a lot to sign 12-13 more players and 2 of them could eat $13-15 million of it.
