Around the League 2019-2025 Edition

Islanders headed for years of 9th or 10th with an elite goalie. Worst place to be.

As much as I knock Babs, I bet Columbus would have been decent with him first year.

I don't see any way Montreal's that bad unless half the team gets injured again.

I would love them to be right, though.

I bet Columbus would have been decent with him first year.

Why?

Johnny-Jenner-Laine
Johnson-Fantilli-Roslovic
Robinson-Kuraly-Marchenko
Texier-Foudy-Olivier

Werenski-Severson
Provorov-Gudbranson
Beane-Peeke/Boqvist

Merzlikins
Tarasov

I mean...it was a 59 point team last year and didn't exactly add a whole lot to it. They added a few bad heavy minute defenders. Both Provorov & Severson have proven that they can't handle heavy lifting and Werenski is meh in it. Someone has to play against the other team's good players.

In net, neither are likely to be any good. Their #1 PP unit should be fun to watch and depending on how good Fantilli-Johnson is their top 6 might not suck but that's about it. There might be 75 points here.

You forgot about Jiricek, who is tracking to be a #1. Granted it's hard to say how good he'll be as a rookie. You're also seriously underestimating the rest of those d-men, this is a very solid group at worst.

Can't win games unless Elvis is in the building, though.

Am I? Even after having his role reduced significantly by the Sanheim-Braun pairing taking the heavies, Provorov continued to suck at 5v5. Severson was fantastic last year after he had his role reduced to a firm #4 type guy in a super sheltered role after struggling defensively the few years prior whenever asked to do any heavy lifting. Gudbranson is just terrible all around, and Werenski has also historically been junk against heavy lifting.

They have 3 heavy minute defenders that all need sheltering to not get pumped by good competition and Werenski is the only one of the 3 actually good offensively...and he's only just good.

This feels to me like a science experiment where if we could have cloned a 27-28 yr old OEL 3 times and played all 3 together, what would happen if we gave him two of the most over rated "defensive" defenders in the league to stabilize them.

As for Jiricek, where does he play? They already have too many defenders and it's super easy just to leave him in the AHL unless he completely blows the doors off in camp.

To put it another way, one of the worst 3-4 defensive teams in the NHL added the worst defensive top 4 defenders off of one of the other worst defensive teams in hockey and another top 4 guy whose team got way, way better defensively when they replaced him after figuring out that he was bad defensively.

This fixes the problem in the same way pundits in Toronto are always convinced that trading for the #6 defender off of a bottom 5 team is always the key to fixing Toronto's blueline.

Yes.

I'm not saying they're a playoff team. But you said they "didn't exactly add a whole lot to it". Looking specifically at the blueline, they essentially added four top-4 defencemen. Added Provorov and Severson, Werenski only played 13 games last year due to injury, and I don't see why Jiricek doesn't make the team outside of a terrible camp, considering he already played 4 games last year and didn't look out of place.

Also Provorov isn't as bad as you claim here, I'll give you Severson though he can still be a league average 4th d-man and maybe the 3rd pair if he sucks.

I mean, maybe....

They added 2 #4 defencemen, sure. Then a maybe #2, maybe and then whatever Jiricek is who I like a lot going forward but even out of elite prospects we usually don't see 19 yr olds walk in and do anything but hang on for dear life.
Also Provorov isn't as bad as you claim here

Eh, he was a flop as a heavy minute top pairing guy in Philly and then when downgraded to 2nd pairing usage was bad again. It's not like he's leaving a shitshow defensive environment for a good one or anything. When do we accept that the reputation he gained by looking like maybe a #1 defender at 21 yrs old turned out to be smoke and mirrors?

Overall I just don't buy that if you put a bunch of guys who played heavy minutes on bad defensive teams together that they're going to be good. Because they were probably significant reasons that the bad defensive teams were bad defensively.

If anything the team rallies around losing that asshole and performs better because he gone

I think the bottom 6 of the athletic is pretty interchangeable but for me two worst teams are SJS and PHI
