Broke Back Newton

What I find is amazing is that the injury Cam Newton suffered in the accident was effectively the same injury that Tony Romo suffered during a game a number of weeks back. If you need any more evidence on how much of a physical pounding an NFL player takes, there it is. Some of the hits these guys take are effectively as bad as a car accident (sometimes worse).

Given the police report, the fact a witness said that Cam's truck flipped 4 times, and the injuries he suffered (which appeared to relatively minor given the circumstances), I'm assuming that Cam had his seat belt on. Good thing, yet another reminder for folks.

Seriously, flipping car + no seatbelt = body ejected from vehicle. That never ends well.

And it only took 4 posts to turn this into a PSA

Seriously though, if the NC State police want to run a seat belts save lives campaign and want a recognizable sports star to be the public face of the campaign, my first call would be to Cam Newton now.

The reporter from the Charlotte Observer said on the Gold/Ovie show yesterday that CAM has amassed 16 traffic tickets (give or take) including college and the surprise was that he was driving since he normally had a personal driver.

And ironically, in this case it was the other driver at fault. That driver, who was said to have pulled out in front of Cam, apparently said that that he didn't see him. Amazing. That truck was huge, how could he miss it?*cough*cell phone*cough*

What? A sweet, lifted Dodge Ram with big nubby tires and all the trimmings? That's a pretty nice ride and a LOT more practical than some dumb supercar.

Besides that, a fully kitted out Ram truck could set you back close to $70,000 if you went whole hog. That's a country fella's Cadillac.

I was shocked to see the cab of Cam's truck folded up like a beer can. How can anybody have a truck lifted like that without having a roll bar in the first place? I used to do some heavy duty 4 WD driving in Jordan Lake bottom before it was filled up and along miles and miles of powerlines all around this area where I got to see many trucks turn over. Nobody with a roll bar suffered a serious injury that I saw. Roll bars save lives.

Trouble is that there's not as much open space around these days to take a vehicle four wheeling. Most of the 4 wheel drive trucks you see on the roads these days have probably never been off the pavement or tasted mud. It breaks my heart to see a bad@$$ truck without limb scratches going down the sides and no sign of it ever getting dirty. I suppose as expensive as vehicles are these days, nobody wants to scratch theirs up. I'm a firm believer that a truck deserves the chance to be a truck, not an open backed mini van. #Posers.

Yeah ... that's a country truck being used to parade around the city. Breaks your heart if you're a certain kind of redneck ... and I am, for the mot part.
