Building the Habs Brand

Keep that to the media thread. I like the modern thinking the Habs are using to expand their brand worldwide.

No matter what they do, the Habs will always be sucking hind teat to the Leafs as far as Rogers is concerned.

They will from a conventional media perspective, and it's something the org has no control over, they can't snap their fingers and turn Mtl/Quebec into the Southern Ontario viewership market, but they are trying to reach beyond those borders of thought, which is out of the box thinking - moreso considering how conservative this org has traditionally been.

Don't worry the "freebies" now will cost in another year or two, gotta payoff that huge loan somehow...

I was down in Washington State a couple of weeks ago and they had a bunch of NFL merchandise on display in the local K-Mart. The array of different products with NFL team logos on it was astounding and I remember thinking to myself "Why don't the Habs have stuff like this?"

I was in a wal-mart in Texas this summer. The amount of Cowboys/Rangers stuff they had put the sports stores up here to shame! It was unreal! They go all out!

Maybe there's something to be said for a unique approach and how social media challenges business models, but "big" teams in different sport partner up for joint branding efforts... I think Man U and the Yanks did something. <vomits> Anyway, I think apparel branders were key in all that, Nike in this case.

Not sure if it works if all teams wear Reebok.

Actually to me this is the great debate. We know the Leafs own Ontario and their brand is spread across Canada due to the sheer audacity of Toronto TV execs for years shoving their games down everyone's throats across Canada despite being a losing franchise for so long. However the Habs also have a dominant market reach in the rest of Canada outside of Quebec and I truly belive they have more fans across Canada than the Leafs do once you drop their respective home provinces from the data.

But what about the US market? What about the global market? I doubt neither team at this point has much of an economic stamp outside of Canada but I would bet the Canadiens franchise has more followers or recognition than the Leafs franchise. The Chicago Cubs are a historic franchise but I doubt they compete with the NY Yankees on the global stage.

This Club 1909 program looks interesting. I would love for the Habs to one day fly a few of these fans throughout the world who have garnered lots of points to a game and a weekend in Montreal. With sponsors like Air Canada and some hotel chain it could be done without too much cost but the exposure could be very nice.

The trick is convincing the franchise that this increased global exposure and the cost associated with doing it will bring in significant additional revenues. It's all well and good to have fans in Irkutsk but how much money can they generate for you? How do you find more wallets to empty?
