CHIP ALEXANDER...

*AH*

Well-known member
...wrote the article in the N&O today on the NCSU FOOTBALL game. What might be going on here? Is Chip no loner covering hockey - just when he's starting to learn something about it? Is the N&O not covering the Canes anymore - with all the exciting happ'nins over on Edwards Mill Rd? Or since they're payin' him for not doin' much all summer are they just giving him something to justify his existence and their paycheck? (/toungueincheek off)

Not much else to talk about, eh?

Not sure what you're getting at, Allen. Chip has covered ACC sports in addition to his hockey work for years.

Chip basically goes into hockey hibernation from the end of the UFA period until the week before camp opens...maybe a tweet here or there or an article once in a while.

I'm ok with him dabbling during this 'dead' period in ACC sports just to give him something to do, but once camp opens he should be focused on nothing but the Canes all the time. Frankly he should be at Traverse City covering our prospects in person but the reality is that the N&O doesn't value Canes coverage enough for that. He should also be on every road trip as well, but we know that doesn't and never will happen. Its absolute crap that just about every away game is summarized by an AP report in the N&O rather than written by a beat writer for the team who is, you know, actually on the beat all the time. It not going to change though....

But that's not unique to the N&O/Canes these day is it? I though the LATimes stopped sending Helene Elliot on road trips a few years back.

I suspect that if the Canes ever start the season on time and are at least in the playoff conversation, that he'd travel to some games on the east coast.

Chip has always acted as a second columnist to DeCock during the dead period for hockey ... and sometimes during the NHL season too. He throws out pieces on the local ACC teams that don't require travel to anywhere further than his couch. Nothing has changed so far as I can tell.

And for the record so far I'm concerned it's now official ... I'm a former NandO subscriber as soon as my annual subscription runs out in February.

A. No, it isn't unique to the Canes. In fact only a handful of teams still have local beat writers that travel with them during the regular season. Mostly Original 6, Northeastern US and Canadian teams, although I think the Vancouver Sun also stopped sending their beat writers on the road a few years ago.

B. I got the chance to ask Chip about that a couple of years ago and he said the paper would only give him the budget to travel for the playoffs ... if the team made it. No changes would be forthcoming for an improved level of competitiveness.

I think he managed to sneak away for a couple of close road games over the last few years but it's few and far between.

Yeah ... they would occasionally send him to DC and to Atlanta back in the day but even those are gone now ... and probably have been for about 5 years now.

What's even funnier is the Durham paper doesn't even send anyone to all home games. And that started way back.

But if coach K farts, they will have 12 guys on that story.

Guess which coverage sells copies of the Morning Herald. IIRC, the Canes have never sold many tickets to Durham Co addresses for whatever reason.

I think the Durham paper is barely even a paper. I can't recall them breaking any stories about state government stuff or anything else. I guess maybe most of their staff covers Duke BB.

I think the print paper readers are literally dying off for all papers. I don't think people under 40 or so read the printed paper. So it's just a matter of time before they have to turn out the lights.

The Durham Morning Herald remains in print for two reasons ... Duke basketball and Durham politics. Both of which are nationally compelling.

Well, Chip must have heard us.....he has a lenghty article posted today featuring Justin Faulk.

Seems natural that management should be pushing Faulk, Skinner (to a lesser degree because it's natural not to have a trust level with him after the last couple of years), Lindholm and the younger draft picks as the season goes along. Don't talk to me about media autonomy when it comes to the Canes either, especially when it comes to their lone beat writer. Chip talks about subjects and players that Chip gets encouraged to talk about.
