The last west coast game of the trip. At least it‘s 30 minutes earlier.

The Canes look to rebound from an awful performance in San Jose. RBA put the lines into the blend-o-matic with no impact. There will be a lot of mix and match tonight with Gibbons sent back to Charlotte and no replacement brought in. That means TVR will make his season debut. Special teams are a nightmare with the PP 0 for the last 13 and the PK allowing 2 goals for the 3rd time this season. Expect Mrazek in goal.

The Ducks are off to a 5-2 start and are coming off a 5-2 win over the Slugs on Wednesday. Adam Henrique has 4 goals, Hampus Lindholm has 4 assists. They’re winning with defense; John Gibson has a 1.85 GAA and .941 save % in 6 games. Ryan Miller has played 1 game and allowed 1 goal. They lead the league with 1.71 goals against per game but they’re 26th in goals for per game at 2.57. Their power play is awful with 1 goal in 18 opportunities.

Maniscalco was up and tweeting yesterday so he should be back tonight.

Buckle in for a defensive slugfest unless the Canes can get their offense untracked. The Ducks have a decided advantage in goal, as Gibson is one of the best in the biz right now, but Carolina has a lot more offensive depth ... should they decide to actually apply it. The Ducks are back to playing with an edge this season under Dallas Eakins, which is in their organizational DNA from days of old. Bottom line ... getting the puck possession game going and taking the upper hand territorially will be the recipe for Carolina. Letting the Ducks muck up center ice and run guys on the boards ... less ideal.

Go ... win a game and come home.

Glad to hear about Maniscalco. As for tonight's game, really don't have a feel for it. Part of me 'feels' the guys are going to put it all together tonight and embarrass the ducks by at least 6 goals. Yup, you read it. Like 8-2, 7-1, 6-0... 9-3? Then another part of me says the Ducks will muck it up and we'll be lucky to score one. Somewhere in the middle, with the good guys on top? Canes 5 Ducks 4.

The Ducks do not have the depth or the defense to handle the Canes when Carolina plays that up tempo, offensive speed game with the D joining the rush. Unless Gibson stands on his head yet again, this is a game you really would love to win and come home with 4 out of a possible 6 points on the always tough West Coast swing!

Tonight’s officials. Straight from high school.

Referees:
Tom Chmielewski #18, Garrett Rank #7

Linesmen:
Travis Gawryletz #67, Devin Berg #87

Berg is the most experienced of the lot, having worked 273 games. Canes were 1-2 with Chspellcheck and 3-3 with Rank last year. Rank has one of the more unbalanced penalty spreads I’ve seen, calling 31%/43%/27%. He’s also a scratch golfer and won the Western Amateur this year and played in the 2018 U Open. Gawryletz has an older brother who is also a linesman.

No Maniscalco tonight or probably for a while. He experienced abdominal discomfort in San Jose and went to the hospital. A large mass in his stomach was discovered. He’s been undergoing tests and receiving treatment and was released this morning so he can return to Raleigh for the surgical procedures (note the plural) he’ll require.

This went from bad to worse. Canes give up an early goal in the 2nd, then a shortie and it’s 4-0. Mrazek out, Reimer in. I’m wide awake but this is over.
