Was anyone aware that Eric Staal plays for the Wild?

The Wild have cooled off recently, going 4-6 in their last 10 and on a 2 game losing streak. This is their last game of a 5 game road trip and they've given up 4 goals in each of the previous 4 games. Their only win came against Florida, beating them 7-4. They've fallen 1 point behind the Blackhawks in the Central with 1 game in hand. This is not your father's Wild team, either; they're tied for 2nd in the league in goals scored with 225, an average of 3.31 per game. The scoring is spread around. They don't have any players in the top 10 in goals, assists or points. But they have 4 players with 20 or more goals, with Mikael Granlund and Eric Staal tied at 23. Granlund leads with 41 assists, just outside the top 10. They haven't lost their commitment to defense, either, 5th in the league at 167 or 2.45 per game. Devan Dubnyk is 3rd in GAA at 2.11 and tied for 2nd in save % at .930. The PP is 9th at 20.8% and the PK is 8th at 83.9%.

The Canes will have a skate at 10:30. Jay McClement left the Islanders game with a lower body concern and his status is unknown. The Cherkers are home this weekend, so it's possible that we could see a recall from Charlotte if he can't go, or we might see the return of Ryan Murphy to the lineup, skating as a 4th line wing. Peters hinted yesterday that Lack might get the start in goal.

Fox Sports Carolinas for TV.

Have to get 28 of the final 30 points to maybe make the playoffs. :facepalm

It would be a crime to play Murphy as a 7th DMan or as a 4th line winger. Just call up Andrew Poturalski or Andrew Miller or Sergey Tolchinsky or Bryan Bickell instead please if we need another forward. Charlotte is at home and doesn't play until tomorrow.

Forward crisis averted, McGinn is back in the lineup, as is Murphy (on D)

Aho-Staal-Teravainen
Skinner-Rask-Lindholm
Nordstrom-Wallmark-Stempniak
McGinn-Ryan-Brown

Slavin-Faulk
Hanifin-Pesce
Dahlbeck-Murphy

Lack gets the start in goal.

I give up trying to figure out what the plan is with Murphy. Are they expecting him tp make it through 15 games in a row now? What were we doing, thinking if we could get 4 clean points against the Islanders that we could bet back into the playoff hunt and not having Murphy in there gave us the best chance to do that? :shrug

Meh. I gave up on that months ago

I think the plan with Murphy is....no one cares what happens to him. He is pretty much AHL fodder at this point and has no value which is evident by the way the Canes have handled him this year. The Canes will just make other moves to cover the expansion draft as they honestly have pretty low risk of losing anyone of real value. Compared to many orgs, the Canes are in good shape with the expansion draft.

So far Murphy's career highlight is getting his car filled with packing peanuts on Youtube......not a good sign of the future.

And I know you can re-optimize pretty much any draft and make yourself crazy, but the sad thing is, Murphy at #12

1 12 Carolina Ryan Murphy D Kitchener Rangers [OHL] 144 6 31 37 38 2016-17
1 13 Calgary Sven Baertschi L Portland Winterhawks [WHL] 195 41 48 89 46 2016-17
1 14 Dallas Jamie Oleksiak D Northeastern University [H-East] 111 6 13 19 82 2016-17
1 15 NY Rangers J.T. Miller C U.S. National Development Team [USHL] 266 56 70 126 114 2016-17

wasn't even the biggest just-miss we had in the 2011 draft:

4 103 Carolina Gregory Hofmann F Ambri-Piotta [Swiss-A]
4 104 Calgary Johnny Gaudreau L Dubuque Fighting Saints [USHL] 220 70 122 192 38 2016-17

DOH!

(Not to mention Brandon Saad, Boone Jenner, Rickard Rakell (a Plymouth Whaler, no less), Nikita Kucherov, Vincent Trocheck, Andrew Shaw, Ondrej Palat, etc...) We did nab Rask in the 2nd round though, so it wasn't a complete whiff.

And I will counter with this. Ryan Murphy was ranked 12th among NA skaters in the final CSS rankings in 2011, the 3rd highest dman. Dougie Hamilton and Sven Baertschi were ranked ahead of him. Hamilton went 9th to Boston, Baertshi went 13. Adam Larsson was ranked #1 overall on the International side, he went 4th overall to the Devils. So we didn't draft Murphy out of position according to the draft "experts".

Johnny Hockey was ranked 193 that year, listed at 5'6", 137 lbs. You can make the case that he was a reach at #104.

So more than just our guys were wrong. Still, one can argue that when "the experts" are wrong, we should have someone pretty smart on our side who knows better. All I know is we've got more than our share of wasted high end picks, and Murphy seems to be yet another.

The crazy thing is that they're only 7 points out with 14 to go. Looking at the upcoming schedule... the Predators are beatable in Raleigh. Then there's a four game road trip that should mathematically eliminate the Canes... except they've actually been 2-1-2 in their last five on the road, with the one regulation loss being in Denver, where they've stunk since '96... seriously, they're like 2 wins in 20 years there.

Just looking at the rest of March:

Nashville - should win
@ Philadelphia - can win... road game so they might blow it.
@ Florida - can win... road game so they might blow it.
@ Montreal - unlikely to win.
@ New Jersey - should win... road game so they might blow it.
Detroit - should win
Detroit - should win... back to back scenario, so they might blow it.
Columbus - could win since it's a home game.

There's a pretty reasonable possibility of the guys going 4-1-3 during the next 8 in true Caniac hand wringing, "how could they blow that lead," head banging style. Of course, the last thread to speculate on such matters saw them go 0-5-0, so y'know... just sayin'.
