IF* we had to sacrifice one young d-man for a top-6 forward, who'd you choose?

The premise of the question is simple and to have some fun before the "wouldn't trade any of 'em" crowd comes along.

Eventually, we're going to need to trade some of our D prospects for forwards. There's simply too many prospects for too little space.

You can use whatever criteria you want. I'd trade X because his value is the highest and the return is highest, I'd trade Y because he's overrated, whatever.

I put 5 names because they're, in my opinion, the five most valuable d-men in our pipeline.

It depends on the forward we’re trading for but probably Guhle.

Guhle gets you the highest return right now , but curious what Hutson can fetch

I would keep WIFI unique skill set and a physical force

It would need to be like a Brady Tkachuk for me to contemplate moving hutson/Reinbacher/Guhle.

Just trade our late first and a second for a Dach/Newhook type forward, hopefully draft a future top 6 forward with our own first and we'll be set.

Not the poll question, but I wonder who could be had with Struble, the Jets pick and the Devils pick.

Maybe give a bit more value and make a play for Lafreniere.

I doubt Struble has that much value outside of Montreal.

Xhekaj does though. He'd be the one to move the needle in the right trade.

I’d be quite reluctant to trade him.

I said Xhekaj with reluctance because as the old bag who bet on Ben Richards in The Running Man, he's one mean motherfucker

He’s not young and will likely be flipped by the end of 25-26.

But valid question, he could bring back a significant return if he stays healthy.

Matheson (and Savard) aren't in this poll because neither one of them, under any circumstances, will be here in 5 years.

They are "now" players, while the other 5 are the projected future of this organization's defense.

What's fun about this thread is weighing the pros & cons of trading a player with perceived high value, as opposed to trading a player with lower value.

My #1 trade candidate of the five listed would be Lane Hutson by a significant margin.

For starters, his value is as high as it'll ever be right now, to the point that he's become grossly overrated.

I mentioned this in the other thread, but when the 04-05 lockout ended, the rules were changed to make the game more accessible to smaller players by removing (most of it, anyway) of the hooking & grabbing. However, the problem is, it only opened the door for small forwards. The league is still allergic to small defensemen, and for good reason. You can count on two hands the amount of d-men the amount of NHL regulars playing defense at 5'10" or smaller, and

So, with Hutson being one of the Hobey Baker candidates again and about to go pro, this would be the ideal time to trade for a forward. Let another team take the risk.

No more injury prone forwards :D

Exactly , his value like most prospects is before they play a game because its all upside and intrigue

If the Habs had zero prospect capital , sure keep him but its our organizational strength

He is nowhere Hughes with elite wheels and offensive ability
