Ryan Murphy assigned to Charlotte

This is a good move. I'm not sure what he did to deserve his recent streak of scratches, but at least he'll get a lot of playing time, especially--as Andy noted--during the break.

Fine. He's obviously been scratched along with Bellemore to allow the more experienced Komisarek and Harrison to play. I don't particularly like how Harrison has played since his return to the lineup but Komisarek is actually playing a lot better than he was in spot duty earlier on ... and God knows the Canes need his snarl out there, if nothing else.

Murphy just flat out needs to play. He completely exceeded my own expectations for him early on in the season but seemed to be losing the thread a little as the games piled up. He was beginning to show uncertainty with the puck on his stick and when that starts to happen with a rookie you either need to sit him or reduce his role. That ain't really an option in Carolina's D by committee approach so getting him in the AHL will serve to let him rebuild his confidence a bit.

Surely am missing the ability to actually skate the puck across the blue line instead of the perpetual dump-and-chase, but some dominating time in the AHL is probably the best thing for him right now.

And, fortunately, the Olympic break provides the time for him to do so and not even necessarily miss anymore NHL games.

Sorry if you had vacation plans, Ryan. But, you know...hockey.

Makes sense, kid needs to play. And apparently the rules required that he go down NOW to be eligible to play in Charlotte through the Olympic break. So this move makes sense considering the Canes had decided to remove Murphy from the NHL lineup.

Man those Olympic AHL eligibility rules are complicated. But they do make some sense. These kids are already being exposed to a condensed NHL schedule...The AHL Olympic break eligibility rules somewhat avoids a situation where you have a waiver exempt player being exposed to playing potentially 90 regular season games between the NHL and AHL.

The other thing I did take from the rules is that a player like Justin Peters, who would have to clear waivers, can be sent to the AHL at any point before the NHL Olympic roster freeze and play there during the break (provided of course he clears waivers). I'm still thinking at some point here if Cam is ready to go that JR will waive Peters in an attempt to get him to Charlotte before the Olympic break (if we don't trade him first). It does us no good at all to have Peters sitting around for another month without playing, he's proven that won't work.

I agree ... fog of war and all that. There will likely be a BUNCH of guys waives by a BUNCH of teams right before the freeze. Sneak him into that jumble and take your chances.

I was getting ready to inquire about Lindholm, but thought I should read the supplied link. So Murphy had to get assigned today based on number of days he was on an NHL roster, yet Lindholm could delay as he was on the NHL roster for fewer days than Murphy.
