Why exactly is Nonis still here? I am having a real hard time understanding this. Is it because of his contacts with other GMs? Is it his negotiation skills for player contracts (haha)?

There has to be a reason - it just doesn't make sense to have a guy who's been a part of putting this godawful core together part of the "decision making" moving forward.

If he's not allowed to make major decisions without Shanny, why does he need to be here? Shanny isnt confident in his own capabilities to get through this trade deadline? Does he really trust Nonis' opinions on any player?

I just don't get it.

they are waiting for Don to call for it, seems like we are following Don's advice (remember Shitson?)

Shanny can still value his opinion/input without believing he should have full atonomy to make moves.....especially when Shanny views himself as the architect of our future.

We tend to paint things in black and white....that if he isn't great, he's absolutely trash. The fact Nonnis has been able to be a GM of two pretty high profile franchises, has spent the time in the business that he has, etc.....I'm not surprised in the least that Shannahan views him as valuable to have around, even if he doesn't want him to be making moves himself.

Kudos to Dave for sticking around under such a scenario and being willing to provide what he can.....I'm sure many a GM would storm out in a huff once their power was removed.

Explain?

Sure. When Shanahan came in he had no NHL team executive experience. He said plain as day he wasn't doing anything of significance until he had time to evaluate. So, he allowed some tweaks before the season started and let big moves wait -- firing your GM is as big a move as you can make. Nonis will be kicked to the curb in time.

Watching L.A. and Calgary, and after watching New York Islanders I can safely say that its not talent per se that is causing us to drift to the bottom of the barrel, its the amazing intensity and urgency of other teams play I am witnessing. I really think two big catalysts for our downfall is the Ovechkin kill of our little beast Komarov, and the weird loss of passion by Kessel. And the lack of passion by Kessel could be as a result of the really big catalyst, the presence of Clarkson who quite frankly would be challenged right now to get a top two line spot on the Marlies. Guy is just a total team killer.

I think the preferential treatment of Clarkson for most of the season, on PP and top minutes has really smoked the team. Guys hate seeing a dud get top minutes. A Komisarek revisit to be sure imho.

Something is up to cause such a dramatic change in everything.

This implosion followed by a total inability to right the ship is just unheard of.

The year we made the playoffs, we played with such vigor, heart, and effort. Where did it go? I just don't get it.

Shanny wasn't going to blow up the coach/management group right away. He had to wait and see, probably because our ownership structure does not allow the new top guy to just make changes like that at the drop of a hat. Now that we've pissed away another season, it's almost certain that Nonis is gone.

It was a mirage. If that season had gone 82 games instead of 48, they'd have probably slumped themselves out of the playoffs that year too.

Agreed but shit how does your entire offence fall apart in 20 games ? Maybe you aren't as good as the roll they were on or as bad as some slumps but having Phil , JVR , Boz, Kadri , everyone can't hit a barn right now , it's Lunacy

I think an even bigger issue is that someone like Babcock probably wants nothing to do with this shit show now.

If the goal is to tank, and it sure looks like it is, then why bring in someone with competence? Nonis is still there because he is a lame duck GM that will take the fall for the shit season. There is no way you bring in a competent GM now because they'll all ask for an evaluation period. Shanny is your de facto GM and any moves made by deadline will be up to him and your pro and minor league scouts. Nonis is the secretary that simply places the call.

Hope that answers your question.

Someone told me that this was Shanahan's master plan before the season even started and I chose to not believe it, if it is true, then wow, that is pretty Machiavellian.

I would imagine a beast in his day like Shanahan probably has a hard time looking Clarkson in the eye or Kessel, without wanting to barf right now.

They don't need the circus that comes with firing your GM right now.

Take care of business in the offseason when the media will be more focused on the playoffs.

Nonis's name is merely on the door right now. It holds no ground
