Toronto Maple Leafs Claim D Tim Erixon

Good to see. He's been dumped by a few teams now, but defenders deserve some patience (which the Leafs seem to be figuring out, finally).

Mindz will be pretty stoked.

Seriously though, this guy is definitely worth picking up... especially for free.

Seems like a decent move, he's only 24. Worth a shot.

It'd be so fascinating to see a behind the scenes of what influence if any that the stats geeks have on these sorta pickups.

He's a guy worth taking a chance on. He's had a pretty good career and never really got a long look.

I'd bet a lot given his stats are good.

I assume they made this move mainly because they expect one or more defensemen to get dealt before the deadline, and they don't want to raid the Marlies blueline for players when they're fighting for a playoff spot. So, goodbye to two of Phaneuf, Polak and Holzer, maybe?

As for Erixon, he's worth taking a shot on for free. Former first round pick who's looked pretty good at the AHL level. He's also an RFA, so we'll control his rights.

This yeat he will help the AHL team get to the playoffs. They'll give him a chance with the big club next year and trade him for a 2nd rounder at the deadline.

Write up from eliteprospects:

A very smart defenseman that plays a solid two-way game. Erixon is not very spectacular, but plays an effective and rather simple game. He does not throw his body around, but can be aggressive and has active stickwork. Hockey sense is very good and so is his offensive positioning. Not a pure offensive force, but has enough skills to put up points and quarterback the powerplay if needed. Furthermore, he has good size and mobility and handles the puck well.

Size, mobility, smart, puckhandling ... promising.

Jeez nice pickup, guess we have access because of where we stand in the standings Why wouldn't Edmonton pick him up? Or Buffalo, or they just want to continue tanking?

Wonder what gives. Drafted 23rd overall in '09 by Calgary. Now on his 4th team in 4 years.

He's going to be an interesting case. Could be the Leafs' Hatteberg. Or, he could prove some of the limits of advanced statistics.

His traditional stats are pretty good too though. He was playing in the Elite League at 17, was a 40 point guy there at 20, has been a 50 point guy in the AHL at 21, 22 and 23. Its weird. He's been through 4 organizations now, and never gotten much of a shot. Either something is missing, or he's just waiver aged and has been squeezed out of some deep teams.
