Will Panthers win the "Big Game"

Where did the NFL go wrong with somehow losing complete control of even knowing a good catch from a bad catch any more? How many times all season long did we see most officials and the NFL replay system just be at a complete loss of understanding the rules of a reception vs no reception?

I think the NFL was pretty consistent with ruling on those types of catches. I saw a couple other reply reviews of similar situations, especially in the end zone over the past couple of weeks of season and playoffs where they were all ruled no catch as they didn't maintain possession all the way through the ground. That said, most of the calls I thought were all horrible and looked like catches to the average person, including Cotchery "catch" in the Superbowl.

I think the NFL needs to take a look at the rulebook on who those types of "catches" are ruled. It makes no sense to overturn those plays when you have the opposite end of the rule book where people fly toward the end zone out of control, touch the pylon with the football, and then lose control of the ball.....and that is a touchdown. Some rule book consistency tweaks need applied.

Carolina's biggest issue next year will be seeing how Cam responds and what damage was done to his leadership in the locker room. There is at least going to be some doubts internally about him from team mates after watching his on field pouting, not going for the fumble recovery, and walking out on the press conference. That combined does not make for a great team mate. Hopefully someone gets a hold of Cam over the next day or two and coaches him to show a little humility and respect to his team mates and the opponents that just beat him up all over the field.

It was a catch and putting the replays together should have made that a pretty easy call. I have no clue what the ref was looking at an how he came to conclusion that wasn't a catch.

Rivera said after the game that the ref told him there wasn't enough evidence to overturn the call on the field. I'm really not sure what he was looking at to make that conclusion.

The schedule monkeys have Carolina at Denver (oh, and Seattle... again) next season... would they set that up as a Week 1 rematch? That would be interesting.

Yeah, it would shock me if that wasn't the week 1 Thursday night kickoff game. They like to take either the Super Bowl participants or the most recent champs for that game if the schedule monkey allows it. And the champ is always home.

Rivera failed. They refused to adapt and kept Cam in the collapsing pocket all night. Cam couldn't hit his receivers all night and when he did they couldn't catch. The Panthers simply got outcoached and outplayed.

Meh. Most of these guys have had 3-5 years of playing with Cam and VERY little about him has changed. I think you're reading too much into one bad day. They've never had a problem playing with him in the past, although you wouldn't know it from how the media couldn't shut up about the towel over his head during his first two years. Cam's their best player and those guys ... despite being football players ... aren't idiots. The best chance they will always have to win is Cam doing his thing. There's some downside to that, but it's nowhere near as big a deal as some clowns in the sports media want to make it.

Am I thrilled with his behavior in that loss? No. It certainly wouldn't be my preference. But I'm not going to ignore what he CAN do because he acts like a spoiled brat when they lose.

Yup ... see my comments on the offensive gameplan above. I thought that Shula had grown out of his tendency to stick to his plan even when it doesn't work, but I was wrong. He's still David Shula, it turns out. A chunk of that is clearly on Rivera, especially their overall lack of team poise. Soooooooo many nervous, stupid mistakes. They come from somewhere, and that usually starts with bad preparation.

That said ... live and learn. It's a young-ish staff and nobody's getting fired over it. They've certainly grown up as a coaching staff as the team has improved and there's no reason to figure that won't continue.
