The problem is they have to shut down the league. I understand why they want to stop doing that. No other league would do it.

I agree. Too bad that the Olympics are just as irrelevant as the all star game.

They pretty well shut the league down for one week for the all star game, whats another week for something that is vastly more interesting.

NHL just wants the IOC to share a bigger piece of the pie....NHL will say it loses millions by closing for 2 weeks. IOC will have to compromise, the hockey tournament was probably the biggest viewership draw for them in Sochi, Vancouver, and possibly Salt Lake City also....

NHL knows this, and will milk it...like only Bettman knows how to...

yeah, it's ridiculous to ask guys that are already on their way somewhere

It's pretty obvious that they're gonna make do with the guys that are already there.

It's kinda getting pathetic how players are pulling out like this so close to the all star day

I don't know 2002, 2010 and 2014 Gold Medals were really special.

I remember the Olympic hockey tournaments before, when we lost on an illegal Forsberg goal etc

The players love the Olympics.

And I remember when Zarley Zalapski and Dave Tippett played for Team Canada at the Olympics while the NHL continued playing. So what? I don't care if the players love the Olympics. That's not what they get paid for. They get paid to play NHL games and win NHL championships. Any other endeavour which could potentially have a negative impact on that mission is at best a waste of time and something that should be avoided at all cost.

Nobody cares about a competition where the best players are not present. A competition between the best players of each country on the other hand is really interesting. The Summit Series was huge and Canada Cup was pretty much the second most important hockey tournament after the Stanley Cup.
