Laine v Matthews

Edmonton never made a retarded choice at the time of the draft. Even Seguin was a consensus #2 at the time.

But yeah, I prefer the 2nd overalls except with respect to Stamkos (Doughty is even, imo) and Tavares (who I take over Hedman still).

basically i just want to be reassured that matthews has special upside, because my eye test sure tells me Laine does. of course i'd rather have a dominant 2 way center but i definitely wouldn't want to use a 1st overall on a guy with less upside, if that is in fact the case.

and I was dismissing the Laine hype too until very recently. even his wjc performance didn't matter to me.

but if you guys feel good about him being a bigger, faster tavares, then that's kind of awesome.

thing is, Eric Staal 2.0 isn't exactly a convincing pick ahead of Laine, so if that's matthews i start stressing again.

Eric Staal had that crazy rookie year in the NHL, but that was the year after the lockout with all of those PPs and otherwise his production isn't elite. His junior production wasn't anything special.

Age 17
56 gp, 23 gls, 62 pts, 1.11 ppg

Age 18
66 gp, 39 gls, 98 pts, 1.48 ppg

That doesn't compare to the franchise centers from the OHL like Stamkos (1.72 ppg at 17/NHL at 18), Tavares (2.00/2.00), Seguin (1.68/NHL), Thornton (2.07/NHL) or even Marner (2.00/2.04) or Strome (1.90/1.98). Matthews has put up elite production at every level.

Laine is also an amazing talent though. Its not a knock on Laine. If we win the lottery for the #2 pick we'd be incredibly lucky.

If a perennial, consistent 70+ point (for 8 years in a row) franchise center is the absolute floor for a player, we should take that any day. That floor is considerably higher than Laine's IMO.

With that said, my money is on Matthews being even better than in-prime Staal. He's a special special talent.

Too bad this is all irrelevant since we're almost assuredly not getting 1st overall.

Laine is the guy I've got penciled in. Better win 2nd at least.

You can also just look and see that they have a 20% chance of getting the #1 pick. Clicking the button 1 billion times isn't as accurate a representation as that 20% value.

Yeah, it's 20% each individual turn, not 20% of the thousand times you clicked that button.

Sounds like someone played with the lottery simulator today. I did and I'm not feeling lucky.

I've never tried the simulator once.

I'm just banking on the 80% chance that we don't end up with #1.

Highly doubt we'll be in the envious position of choosing between Matthews and Laine. If we find ourselves in the position of choosing Laine at all, that would be massive.

I just did the simulator and it went Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, then Toronto... WTF

man, I've run it a few different ones, and it seems like the odds of getting 4th (not just second or third) is greater when you are in last place. another WTF.

by the amount of times I did the draft simulator I think we will pick fourth, and I bet Arizona wins it.

yeah every pair of those picks ws picked in the same order as Bobo's consensus final ranks.

You could hit that button until Saturday evening and the chances are good that it will be different than the general results that thing produces
