Leafs sign John Tavares to 7 year/ $77m deal

Gotta take the good with the bad.

Smooth skating, offensive minded dmen who can lead the transition game and put up 50 points don’t just grow on trees.

If we could somehow sign him for $5.5m, I’d be all over it. That’s a contract we could easily trade later if we need to.

Too much bad and unpredictable .... blow up in yer face shit. Was saying this before his game 7 meltdown.

Carlson had like 50% more points than Gardiner and is better defensively and plays physical. Jake can’t make a case for getting close to what he got. I think fair value for Jake is $6.25m or so. But again, if he wants to stick around...

And when did he compare himself to Doughty?

Probably nothing but I do find it potentially telling that when Dubas goes at length to name the Leafs core, Kadri is not mentioned.

Starts around the 5:45 mark:

Why is Dubas rocking the Clark Kent look. Something we need to know?

Hard pass on being the team that pays Gardiner long term. Dermott isn't far away from being a better version of Gardiner on the left. Borgman and Rosen both look ready to compete for NHL ice time on the left.

and no, the whole team didn't melt down in the 3rd period. Freddy, Jake, and Zaitsev melted.

Ha ha ha..

Shanahan: We'd like to call Christian Dvorak to the stand

Dubas: Christian, how many goals did you score during the last year you played with Marner?

Dvorak (sobbing uncontrollably): 73

Dubas: In how many games?

Dvorak: 81

Tavares: Omg

Tavares signed for basically market value, which is unbelievable value for the Leafs in free agency.

Tavares is also a superstar that signed a long team-friendly bridge contract (age 22-27) - man, oh , man.. if he could convince one of Nylander/Marner to take a deal like that it could be all the difference.

I said it earlier as well.. if the Leafs want out of this contract in the next couple of seasons - they could use a compliance buy-out post lockout (if it happens) and make it disappear with no cap consequence. If this is the case, Tavares takes a 2/3 buy-out over 8-10 years and resigns somewhere else for $13mil/season. Makes out better than any offer he could get this offseason.

Welcome aboard Johnny.. John.. Mr. Tavares..

Zeke, I owe you a beer.

Let me know the next time you feel thirsty.

A buddy thinks the Leafs have the best top 3 centres in the league. I bet him $50 that Crosby, Malkin, Brassard with outscore Matthews, Tavares and Kadri next year. We're going with points per game.

That's a tough bet. The Leafs have the edge on the Kadri/Brassard match-up.

But overall this one still goes to the Penguins, since Crosby & Malkin have both been scoring at 90+ point paces for the last few years.

It's not out of the question the Leafs could catch up. Matthews still has another big step forward left in him, IMO. And although I expect to Tavares to hover around either side of the PPG mark as usual, it'll be interesting to see what he does with more talented wingers than he's ever had, and the protection that Matthews & Kadri will provide.

If everyone repeats what they did last year I win pretty easily. We'll see what the new situation does.

I figure if kessel gets traded and either malkin or Crosby will miss significant time with an injury. But we also have the hyman growth on the top 2 lines.
