Hurricanes GM Search ... it's Don Waddell (5/8)

Re: Hurricanes GM Search ... dedicated thread

What work? What's his job?

I've been told he's working on draft prep. So scouting report review, coordinating the scouts ... that kind of stuff. And clearly that can be done from home.

DeCock frames it as the price he pays for getting"reassigned" instead of "fired." Hard to argue with that.

From that same Freidman piece ...

Confirms that Greeley is in for interviews this weekend. Also we apparently have talked to Montreal AGM Rick Dudley but he's not sure it's for the GM position. Dudley of course is a former GM for several teams but more of a personnel guru these days. He worked for Waddell in Atlanta and was the guy Don hired to replace him as GM when Waddell moved to the President's role. I assume that if we're talking to Dudley about something other than the GM job, then it would be as head of player personnel.

Yeah, right. Have all the scouts over to the house for pre-draft meetings? Give me a break. If he's working on something that important, he's doing it in his office on Edwards Mill. The fact that he's "working from home", tells me he's in full blown job search mode. That's what he's working on.

Re: Hurricanes GM Search ... dedicated thread

none of the scouts are local right? If that's the case he can talk to them via phone or skype from home just as easily as the office. And if he needs to meet in person he can go into the office for that.

Scouting happens in the field and is coordinated by email, video, Skype, etc. That can be coordinated from somebody's house as well as from somebody's office at the arena. And it's temporary until the Canes hire a full time personnel guy, so ... whoopee do. They're paying the guy and that's still his scouting staff. They expect some work out of him but don't want him hanging around the offices like a reminder of bad days gone by.

Robert Kron used to live a mile or so from me. He was a North Raleigh based European scout.

Re: Hurricanes GM Search ... dedicated thread

Not a lot in there, really. Brindy and Vellucci are the inside candidates for coach and Dundon is looking for a nontraditional GM role where the GM is more of an expediter of the owner's big picture. Chip did verify what I had heard about Francis doing draft prep for the team ... while adding the detail that the idea of working from home was Ronnie's.

My guess is that we'll end up hiring a GM who's more of a player personnel specialist while the business end will be largely done out of the owner's office. Fine. Whatever. It certainly won't be the same old, same old.

Re: Hurricanes GM Search ... dedicated thread

Just assemble a good team and start winning. I don't care who does what.

Lebrun on twitter:

Hearing Carolina recently spoke with Bruins exec John Ferguson Jr about their vacant GM job, continue to speak to different people. Canes also spoke with Habs exec Rick Dudley about a different role in their organization but doesn't sound like that will work out at this point.

Re: Hurricanes GM Search ... dedicated thread

a guy with experience may want a new challenge and a big raise. It's not too hard to win in Boston. And the winters there are not fun either.

He was the GM in Toronto for 4-1/2 years and is responsible for bring Paul Maurice in as coach to replace Pat Quinn. They went from 103 points in his first year 2003-04 with mostly the same team that lost to the Canes in the 2002 ECF, to 83 points the year he got fired in 2007-08. His teams missed the playoffs for the first 3 of what became 7 straight years out of the playoffs.

Please just say no to Ferguson Jr. He set Toronto back years with his decisions. If you think we need goaltending now, he screwed Toronto worse, trading Tukka Rask for Andrew Raycroft and brought in Vesa Toskla...
