Hurricanes GM Search ... it's Don Waddell (5/8)

Re: Hurricanes GM Search ... dedicated thread

I was just speculating on the possible situation . BTW the media is always 100% correct right? I mean they would never spin something to make the Canes look bad would they? Especially those guys up there where the teams never win the Cup, at least not lately. :)

Whatever man. Not everybody is out to get us and even you have to admit that some of our moves since the sale have been curious at best.

Re: Hurricanes GM Search ... dedicated thread

More likely Kyle Dubas or Mark Hunter than RF. Beside, with all that important work Dundan has RF doing, would he allow RF to interview with a conference rival?? I'd rather see Uncle Lou in Raleigh leading the charge over Waddell.

I wish the Leafs would pick Mark Hunter and then have Dubas searching for work elsewhere. Dubas is the type of young, analytics driven, wonder kid that Dundon would actually show the money too and maybe even be on the same page with! I'm dreaming of course, but Dubas seems like the exact type that seems like a fit with Tommy D.

Didn't Dubas turn us down already? I thought he was part of the initial glut of candidates?

Francis is gone for good, the Canes terminated his contract today. Joe Nieuwendyk has also resigned as pro scout and advisor.

OK ... and with 53 freaking days before the draft, we're doing what exactly for player evaluation? And if somebody tells me that they didn't fire the scouts, then so help me my head is going to explode. Scouts scout. Somebody has to parse all that data and all we've got is Waddell and a bunch of contract specialists, office managers and bean counters. Oh, and an assistant GM who happens to be fairly busy with the Checkers.

We've had exactly 3 top 3 picks in 20 years. I do NOT want to see us blow this. Handing this monumental decision over to Waddell by default because we can't figure out how to hire a GM is NOT the way to do business. Again ... 53 days.

Probably the right thing to do for all involved so Francis can seek out work elsewhere, kind of a lame duck position here moving forward for RF. You would hope a new GM of some kind gets done in the next week or two!

Re: Hurricanes GM Search ... dedicated thread

And THIS and the Trainwreck that follows is why teams need to stop being a country club for old retired players and stick to being a business.

I'm already so sick of hearing how disrespectful this is to one of the greats. Even Gretzky got fired when he sucked!

Stop recycling!

Re: Hurricanes GM Search ... dedicated thread

well another issue is that some guys might not like the fact that they are not the first choice for GM. Not all guys, but some may turn the job down based on that.

Maybe they thought that keeping Francis around was hindering the search?

Re: Hurricanes GM Search ... dedicated thread

Terminating Francis's contract was the right thing to do for all involved. This move didn't answer any specific questions (Who is new GM?, leading draft?, etc), but it did remove some grey areas and puts the Canes closer to clarity. Francis is now free to pursue other openings and Dundon or others no longer have to answer questions about what Francis was doing.

This is pretty much what should have happened from the beginning but I think the Canes needed a figurehead to send out on the ice to give Cam his golden stick at the end of year. I am only half kidding with that comment. Screw any media reports that try to make Carolina look bad for treatment of Francis. He is a big boy and not performing in your job leads to getting fired. If only the NHL would pull a clown car up to the offices in Toronto/NYC and do the same thing!

FWIW, DeCock seems to think that Waddell is going to be running the draft. God help us.

FWIW, I'd be shocked if Dubas isn't named the GM of the Leafs at some point in the very near future.

He's clearly been Brendan Shanahan's protege from day 1, and Shanny already stepped in once last summer and scuttled Dubas's talks with Colorado about their GM position before signing Dubas to an extension. So, all signs seem to point towards this having been the plan all along---Lou finishes up his initial three-year deal, and Dubas finishes up his long apprenticeship and steps into the big chair.

What that'll mean for Mark Hunter or Lou Lamoriello going forward, that remains to be seen.

Re: Hurricanes GM Search ... dedicated thread

Oh please, RF needed to be canned as did the scout. Do you really think RF is relevant in this age of top golf? Do you really think running a hockey team is as difficult as running a bunch of golf driving ranges. TD has it in the bag. He’s an expert judge of people and knows what to do when number 2 is called at the draft. He doesn’t need scouting and certainly doesn’t need to review any of the candidates.
And on a similar note, Howdy Dowdy is looking for work. He has a block head and strings that can be pulled. A fresh coat of paint and he’s ready to do the TD version of GM.

Re: Hurricanes GM Search ... dedicated thread

People have wondered what Dundon's ownership model would look like. There were a lot of early comparisons to Mark Cuban but I think he is looking more Jerry Jones. Cuban recognizes the need for qualified people and spends money on them. Dundon seems to be heading down the "I can do it" Jones model and will soon hire a puppet figure like a Barry Switzer. I am getting nervous.

The Canes really need a competent GM....and fast.

Re: Hurricanes GM Search ... dedicated thread

RF entered the GM's role with his hands tied, working for an owner who was treading water to keep the team afloat. However, there were too many misses and missteps. You can't blow that many personnel decisions without ramifications. However, this new owner is not doing anything to instill any confidence. He completely mishandled the "promotion" and now termination of RF. He will squander what remains as a fan base in pursuit of his idea of value versus what the market deems as value. Dundon wouldn't pay the guy he wanted as GM. Bill Peters left for greener pastures and he didn't have to pay him. Teams are taking advantage of this "new" business model and we can't even get out of the gate despite all these "head starts." Sheesh...
