Updates and Rumours from around the League

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

2008-09 U. of Denver NCAA 36 12 23 35
2009-10 U. of Denver NCAA 39 6 21 27

1 yr older, same level of competition, no injuries but yet a fairly significant drop in production. .97ppg is impressive for a freshman defender, .69 for a sophomore, not so much.

He played the first two months of the season on a sprained knee. He can be forgiven for slacking off a little early in the season.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

A sprained knee that requires 8 weeks healing time doesn't get played on.

It does if the team doctors don't know about it. When he had to reveal the injury to Hockey Canada at the December camp, they sent him home. Probably what he was trying to prevent the whole time.

TSN says a deal between the NHL and the PA has been reached and they're working on paper work for 5pm.

Kovalchuk's deal will be approved as part of the settlement according to some.

The recovery time your describing is indicative of a grade 2 sprain. You simply don't play on a grade 2 sprain without a brace, you just don't. The pain is simply too significant at the end of the joints effective range of motion, nor can that type of drop in mobility be hidden from a professional coaching staff of any sort.

I'm not saying that he wasn't playing with an injury, I'm just suggesting that you're misinformed concerning how long he was playing his the sprained knee.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

this is a pretty big victory for the NHL if true. They once again flexed their muscles and won. I wasn't looking forward to seeing more teams try to cheat their way around the salary cap.

However, I won't give Gary B and co full marks till they punish the Devils (and possibly others) somehow. Losing a first round pick or two would serve them right.

The Devils will now have a world class scorer at a cap hit that's just a little more than JSG. Pretty weak. I can't help but hope that this comes back to haunt them somehow. The problem with this low cap hit is that Kovy just needs to be a very good player, not necessary one that the team relies on and builds around. I think he can easily be the former, I don't think he can be the latter. The Devils need to pay for this somehow.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

The teams don't deserve punishment. They exploited a loophole in the CBA. Good for them. They didn't do anything wrong.

TGfireandice

CBA amendment would involve stipulations on cap hit for deals going past age 35 and age 40.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

So now that New Jersey is over the cap, what do you think they'll do to get under?

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

So Bettman does Lou another favour.

I mean, how do you 'grandfather in' a deal that's not been approved yet??

I think there's a whole lotta unresolved rosters right now.

NJ, BOS, VAN, SJS at least all really have to make some moves. Probably some other teams as well.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

on another note, Bettman is one clever little weasel.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

As much as it annoys me that they snuck through this deal for Lou, getting the PA to make changes to the CBA in the middle of it has to be considered a win for Gary.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

Looking at NJ's position, I think they HAVE to get rid of Elias.

Getting rid of Zubrus still doesn't get them near where they need to get to.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

They would have to move Zubrus & Langenbrunner...or just move Elias

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

They've got to clear about $4.5 mil in capspace, which means they at least have to get rid of a $5mil contract and replace it with a league min player.

And I don't see anyone taking that Rolston contract without sending big salary back.

This might get interesting.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

Elias is a tough move at 6 per for 3 years and a NMC...

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

Doesn't Elias have a NTC?

Yes. So does Rolston, Langenbrunner, White, and Brodeur.

They'd have their work cut out for them trying to move Rolston.
