OT: Movies/TV Shows

Re: OT: Recent Movies You've Seen

What's wrong with applauding after an excellent movie? It rarely happens but if it merits it I don't see the problem.

I am with the others... I hate it. The makers of the movie aren't there, who are you applauding to?

People applauded after the Avengers when we went.

That's stupid because it's not a movie worth applauding to.

I remember people applauding for Titanic back in 1997, The Dark Knight more recently, and also the final Lord of the Rings film back in 2003. They all deserved the recognition.

If the director or one of the actors were there I would applaud, but there's no one there to applaud. It would be the same as applauding a song on the radio, or a CD, or a TV show.

People are applauding what was a piece of work that was well-made and should be appreciated. You applaud for having enjoyed the shared experience with everyone in attendance.

Audiences can often enhance the viewing experience for a highly-anticipated film and sometimes they'll choose to collectively display their happiness with a movie that met their expectations by clapping.

I like it. It's a rare event but it's one that I've always enjoyed.

Re: OT: Recent Movies You've Seen

The only movie that I have ever attended where people applauded at the end was Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

Geez, I just realized that's over 20 years ago. ****.

Re: OT: Recent Movies You've Seen

They applauded after the showing I went to as well.

One thing this movie did do for me though, is get me to watch Team America World Police again. That scene in Germany or wherever it was, when Captain America shows up, reminded me of the opening scene from that movie. I actually looked over to one of my buddies and said 'America, f*ck yeah!' He got it.

Fair enough, to each their own.

haha - love how tight some people are wound that a bit of appreciation for a visual art leaves them upset and embarrassed.

I think you're misunderstanding. I've never become distraught over it. I just feel that applauding to a movie is the same as applauding to a CD or a TV show. Applause is a way of telling a performer or artist that they did a good job, if the artist isn't there then there's no one to applaud to.

Re: OT: Recent Movies You've Seen

I'm not big on applauding for a film. A live performance? Sure. Movie? Nah.

Avengers will make geeks jizz themselves. So you'll see some standing O's for it I'm sure.

Re: OT: Recent Movies You've Seen

Sacha Baron Cohen was on the Howard Stern show today. According to Cohen it was only the 3rd time he's ever been interviewed as himself. Great interview.

One extremely intriguing thing he said is that he might be playing Freddie Mercury in a movie about Queen. That could be awesome.

Stern does the best interviews on the planet. It was terrific. I'm glad Sacha didn't appear as his character.

A "standing O" may be an altogether different thing for the true geeks.

Re: OT: Recent Movies You've Seen

still think clive owen would have been ideal but then if the rumours are correct he was offered it but didn't want it.

statham would have been interesting.

It's looking like a terrible decision on Owen's part. His career is going down the toilet.

Yeah I was saying the same thing. It was so much more interesting that he appeared as himself. I loved that you could feel the mutual admiration. Howard didn't push him with silly questions and SBC didn't put on any schtick. Loved it.

No doubt, Sacha will not appear on any other show as himsefl. I bet you see him on Leno as the Dictator.

Re: OT: Recent Movies You've Seen
