OT: Movies/TV Shows

Re: OT: Recent Movies You've Seen

Batshit. Crazy.

Apocalypse is easily one of the greatest films ever made.

Never said it wasn't.

In fact, I went out of my way to say that it was an outstanding film and I can appreciate it for its achievement in the genre.

That doesn't mean I found it entertaining. I'm shocked you can't understand the difference between appreciating high art and enjoying it.

Hence my allusion to Full Metal Jacket as the rare brand of film that manages to manifestly achieve both elements. It's fun as hell to watch, funny, original, and a sobering reality at showing warfare.

Re: OT: Recent Movies You've Seen

I agree with you Jays - Apocalypse is a boring ass flick down the center....great, but still boring.

Although the Bridge scene is one of the darkest pieces of comedy I can recall in an anti-war film.

Re: OT: Recent Movies You've Seen

perhaps he did but it didn't fit his profile from the movie where he was basically portrayed as a war profiteer who used the jews as slave labour for the most part. Granted it has been years since I saw the movie but other than the basis for the movie, I didn't really care for it.

I much preferred The Mission and Amistad to Schindler's List.

Yeah, but as pro-Israeli and Jewish as kb is, you're at the exact opposite end of the spectrum. So I don't think you'd like a Holocaust film to begin with.

Re: OT: Recent Movies You've Seen

That scene in the therapists office for both Allen and Keaton in Annie Hall is one of the most brilliant in movie history. Late 60-70`s Allen was such a treat.

Vertigo I have issues with. Can anyone watch the scene with Novak waking up naked in bed with Stewart admitting he took off her clothes and not get massively distracted?

I think Psycho is a film I can watch over and over and it's as creepy as ****. Amazing direction, writing, performances.

Re: OT: Recent Movies You've Seen

Apocolypse enters issues once Brando appears imo. It it does have some marvelous scenes and performances.

It's funny too, because if you asked most people what they remember about that film they would all say the same thing:

And that's just not an important part of the film at all. The scene that people remember glorifies warfare while the film is at its heart a uniformly anti-war piece.

Re: OT: Recent Movies You've Seen

Yeah I don't think that scene glorifies war at all....I got the exact opposite reaction from it. But I can see how a strong argument could be made that it could glorify war for someone looking for that.

Re: OT: Recent Movies You've Seen

Zeke if your going Aronofsky.. the number one has to be Requiem for a Dream ... That movie is FANTASTIC, and I haven't had another movie leave me so gutted by the end of it. I put Luz Eterna on my ipod but can only get halfway through that song before shivering.

Heh. I remember the scene in Jarhead where all of the Marines are watching Apocalypse... at least I think it's in Jarhead, and they're all going nuts cheering all the explosions.

Maybe I missed the point of that scene or it was an indictment on war, but at least that's how I originally perceived it. The rest of the film always struck me as a strong indictment on humanity's violence and our propensity for power and killing though. Duvall is always awesome too.

By the way, if we're talking about the war genre... Blackhawk Down has got to be in the discussion. It's not necessarily a very deep-minded film, but Scott has done a better job than any other director at replicating the sounds and chaos of war in that film IMO. Ask most soldiers and they will tell you that that film has combat portrayed more realistically than almost anything else out there.

Re: OT: Recent Movies You've Seen

Blackhawk Down is such a depressing film though....only saw it once and doubt I would sit through it again. Very uncomfortable to watch.

I really can't.....nor did I realize there was a section of people that did.

The idea of finding something "great" and "boring" at the same time, genuinely escapes me.

I remember I made it a point to watch the film a few days after Pat Tillman died, because of the Rangers element, and yeah it's not a "fun" film. But it's not supposed to be either. Saving Private Ryan doesn't have a ton of replay value for the same reasons.

You respect the New York Yankees and Detroit Red Wings, right?

tough time keeping it off for sure, but I think it falls just below those three. great flick, though, even if it goes over the top at the end.

Re: OT: Recent Movies You've Seen

I honestly haven't seen either of their films.

Har har har.

Seriously though, you can appreciate and respect greatness without necessarily liking it. And like I said, there are a lot of elements to respect in Apocalypse. It wouldn't be considered one of the greatest films ever made without those reasons, and even the casual observer can appreciate those assets.

The production value is excellent, it's got a great cast, amazing cinematography, it has some very intellectual concepts about the human condition that make one reflect, but man oh man is the redux version (the one I've seen) slowwwwwwww. Like I said, once they get on the Mekong it tends to drag until the Kurtz entrance.

Boring is a weird word for it.

Between Robert Duvall, the Flight of the Valkyries, the playboy bunnies, the ****ING TIGER MAN, the boat murders, the bridge scene, and the spearchuckers......all combining equal parts comedy and horror each time....boring just ain't a word that comes to mind for me.
