hmm, you might be on to something zeke - maybe boring is technically the point....war has always been described as long excruciating boredom interrupted by moments of pure horror and fear.

That's exactly what movies like Jarhead and Generation Kill are about: testosterone-infused young males with itchy trigger fingers desperate to get into the shit, and when it happens they react to the stress in different ways. I've asked a few people who have been to Afghanistan and they echoed the same thing: the scariest part of the day was going on the roads and hoping you don't hit an IED.
