If we're going that far, do we also include Halpern, Kaberle, Komisarek, O'Byrne, (probably some useless guys on other teams too)?

Except that you're assuming the number of shots against remains constant. Having Spezza and Karlsson in the lineup more often would probably change that.

Possibly, but last year was a bit of a perfect storm for the Senators. There was a shorter schedule which meant Anderson could have a good streak of elite goaltending while being spelled by both Bishop and Lehner, who could be likewise get good numbers over shorter sample sizes. Additionally, the loss of Karlsson/Spezza got MacLean to get the Senators to buy into the "#PeskySens" thing to great effect. Over an 82 game schedule you probably won't get sustained, above average efforts from the plucky young kids and there's likely to be a regression from Anderson to a more average performance level. On top of that, even though you get Spezza and Karlsson back while adding MacArthur and Ryan, there are still other questions, such as the loss of Alfredsson's presence, their starting the season with a long road trip (they haven't been great outside of late) and just generally increased exepectations.

Not calling "Doom!" here, but the Senators could be a prime target for a bit of a regression.
 
I don't think so.

Alfredsson's presence was a bad thing around these parts until about a month ago, now he's a big hole to fill. Interesting how that happens.

If any team is relying on a 41 year old to make or break their season, they're in big trouble.

I think we have a pretty good group of guys now. A good mix of size, skill and speed. Two excellent goaltenders. I'd be happy if we could add a good D-man however possible, but losing Gonchar & Alfredsson isn't going to be the death knell many believe it will be.

Two of Gonchar's three seasons in Ottawa, Murray couldn't give him away, now suddenly he was the anchor that held the blue line together... :lol

It will be like when Kuba left. A whole lot of nobody noticing.

If not then you do have to accept some kind of regression towards the mean, especially given the possibility for Anderson to tire, as he typically does when he plays more games (which has a corresponding negative impact on his save percentage), and for Lehner to have to make adjustments as a young goalie with limited North American reps under his belt.



That's because Ottawa had very few good offensive players in 2012-13, not that they under-performed. You can't just go out and assume guys like Zack Smith are going to pick up the slack here or that a guy like Pageau will continue his own unsustainable offensive production, as based on his previous track record that is an unlikely prospect. You'll get improvements from guys like Ryan obviously, but that doesn't mean that you'll automatically improve your shooting percentage as a team.

You're right. They'll probably allow many more shots against than last season with a more offensive style of play and defensively average-below average guys like Spezza and Ryan getting significant minutes.

No more trapping in 2013-14 like MacLean had the AHL call-ups do to win games.

They'll likely also be in the offensive zone longer, draw more PP's and therefore reduce the shots against.

Just like every single playoff meeting between the Sens and the Leafs - Sens ruled the regular season, but we shut them out completely in the playoffs.
