OT: American Politics

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

That hipster mom seems like she's there for the sole purpose of having her baby kissed by Ford, ironically.

Yep, the ultimate hipster act is no longer to do something before it's cool...but to do it after it's become not cool.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Exactly.

What sort of personal ideology or political affiliation that elected municipal officials have in their personal time has no bearing on their day-to-day operations as public servants.

Or at least shouldn't in theory.

Lofty dreams. You're showing your lack of experience on this point.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Well DUH! Of course they need new jets.
Our current aging fleet can fly in the arctic. One would assume the new ones should be able to.
The F35s can't.
So we need new jets, but not THOSE jets... stop lapping it up.

Ummm...

Hopefully they're gunning for the Rafales or the Typhoon. Those are both pretty sweet examples of advanced weapons hardware and have a high degree of reliability and service record under their belts.

Both are NATO tested and proven as well as they are primary French and British air superiority fighter of choice.

After doing some research into the F-35 my primary objection stems from the fact that they have a reduced loading capacity for munitions and missiles, a shorter operational range, and a significantly slower cruising speed.

But the biggest issue obviously stems from the fact that it's a single-engine aircraft. Given the vast distances of northern Canada and the amount of geography that our current CF-18s are expected to transverse effectively, it makes little sense to have a fighter with only one engine. That doesn't even begin to take into account the fact that there would be no-fail safe if it experienced problems dealing with low temperatures, which it most certainly would given our low autumn and winter temperatures at high latitude.

HERP! DERP!

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

We don't even have the F-35s, Simple Jack. So yes, please stop bitching about hardware that is only hypothetical.

They're not hypothetical. He still wants them, simple jack.

Prime Minister Harper, Cabinet to decide on F-35 fighter jets without advice from Public Works Procurement Secretariat, say Public Works officials

The Harper Cabinet has until mid-2014 to make a decision on the F-35 fighter jets, either to sign an initial contract for the first batch of four of the stealth fighters for delivery to Canada in 2017, or to delay it, or drop the plan entirely.
Mid 2014. The guy hasn't given up on them.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

1. It doesn't work if you return the initial insult. It just makes you look unoriginal, which we already know.

2. So they haven't been procured yet? Don't get worked up until something actually happens. And this is precisely why your foaming at the mouth histrionics are so funny. You get mad about things that haven't even occurred.

True, but a lot of East Coast workers in the shipyards of Virginia depend on the naval contracts for their livelihoods. If they weren't getting new ships to build on a regular basis they wouldn't have any employment.

Heh. Just the tip of the iceberg (pardon the pun).

Anyway, one issue the left routinely gets wrong is that cuts to defense spending are a fundamental part of getting the fiscal house in order down the road. They aren't, they simply will not bend the curve.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

1. Your silly insult "rules" don't interest me. Go find some random child on the playground to use those on.
2. Nobody said he's procured them. Even considering them is a bad idea for a multitude of reasons, already mentioned. Too expensive; can't fly in the arctic; won't have the same hardware / software as the U.S. version; no bidding process; etc. I know you carry their card in your pocket, so nothing they do blindly matters to you, but step back and try a little common sense for a change. We need new jets - but the F35s don't fit our needs. End of story.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

You're just repeating the criticisms that I've already leveled at the aircraft and then ignored what I've said, attributing to me some position that I never took on them. I don't want them either.

Like seriously, you do this all the time on here. Someone will have the same position as you on a topic and you'll actually get into an argument over them as if they disagreed.

But that's not even the point. The point is that your hyper-partisan sensibilities frequently allow you to ignore actual waste like billions in wasted tax dollars in Ontario by the Liberals and focus on scenarios that haven't even happened yet. At least I have the ability to separate myself from the party line and formulate an opinion that differs from theirs. Otherwise I would want the aircraft.

Very true. Maybe some adjustments need to be made, but removing them entirely is not the answer.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

How about just work on getting some attack helicopters? We could get tons of those.

Australia has a small fleet of Apaches and they have a smaller population than us, so there is no real reason why we shouldn't have a few of those ourselves. They would have been insanely valuable in Afghanistan as a close air support option for the light and mechanized ground infantry.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

It makes a ton of sense. We could actually invest in a pretty big arsenal.

I told you, and showed you, that they are still after the F35s. To that, you told me:
They need new jets. Stop bitching. There will be an open and transparent process for the bidding.
Whatever you said after that post is irrelevant to your telling me to stop complaining that they're still after the F35s. You don't even believe they're still after them, despite me posting the proof more than once in this thread. You think the F35s are dead, and believe an open and transparent bidding process is ongoing, when it's clear that they are waiting until the summer of next year to decide on jets we can't use.
As much as you say you agree with me that they should choose something else, you're not acknowledging that they're not even interested in anything else. Ever since his first election win, it's been F35s or bust. That's the fact.

But that's not even the point. The point is that your hyper-partisan sensibilities frequently allow you to ignore actual waste like billions in wasted tax dollars in Ontario by the Liberals and focus on scenarios that haven't even happened yet. I've never once defended Ontario's Liberals over the gas plant scandal. Not once.
