Leafs - Sens - Habs 2013-14

Sure, they tell you about possession... but I don't think they tell us anything more than regular old shots for and against.

Forget all this Corsi bullshit, it boils down to this when you are giving up the most shots in the league and generating one of the fewest shots for totals it means you are spending the majority of your time chasing the puck in your own end, which means more higher shot totals/scoring chances/goals against.

This team simply is putrid defensively, want to know a team that excels defensively? A team like Detroit and Chicago, they spend very little time hemmed in their own end because they are able to get the puck up to the forwards and maintain possession in the other teams end... the Leafs are the opposite end of that spectrum.

Heh.

I would tell you why this is ironically hilarious, but I'd rather let you figure it out for yourself.

They probably steal a couple of those games late in the year and make it.

But I do think that the 40 shots against/game took its toll. You can't give up the volume of shots this team surrendered and win.

Montreal blocked over 1500 shots this year and won. They were allowing a massive amount of shots, they just weren't getting through to Price. Perhaps your D needs to sacrifice a little more?

Really? There are plenty of people acting like the team in front of us right now is the "Real Leafs."

I'm sorry... "Real Leafs"? If they aren't the Leafs then who are they? Faux Leafs?

The team in front of you choked to epic proportions. The were wearing Leaf blue. They were the Leafs. Pretending they weren't the "Real Leafs" is dangerous because glaring issues will not be fixed then. To think they simply had a bad go of it and Bernier was out and everything in hunky dory is not the way to look at your team. Even if those things were true then you would need a better backup goalie, more leadership etc.

I hate to be the one to break it to you but these are the "Real Leafs". Lucky for you Leiweke sees that.

No one is saying that?

Or just not you?

I don't think anyone thinks the Leafs are a 16-20 win team HL. You're taking this a little far. The "real Leafs" however choked, and choked badly. The fact it has happened before points to a systemic issue within the club. Not recognizing that will lead to more of the same.

Nah, the Leafs are 5th in blocked shots.

Being up in blocked shots isn't a good thing. It means you spend too much time in your own zone. There is a direct correlation between blocks and corsi.

BS rankings (Corsi close ranking)
1. Montreal - 1479 (26th)
2. Calgary - 1400 (27th)
3. San Jose - 1268 (5th)
4. Winnipeg - 1256 (20th)
5. Toronto - 1253 (29th)
6. Islanders - 1252 (15th)
7. Edmonton - 1229 (28th)
8. Anaheim - 1209 (14th)
9. Buffalo - 1206 (30th)
10. Dallas - 1200 (10th)

Dallas and San Jose are the only top 10 possession teams in the top 10 in blocks. Islanders and Anahem are in the middle, and everyone else are the bottom 5 possession teams.

You make some good points about the offense, the Kessel line sputtered down the stretch and it very well could be because of the oylmpics. However, Randy actually cut down Phaneufs icetime down to 24 mins a game, so really Phaneuf cannot use the " I was tired excuse" to justify things, same as every one else not named Kessel/JVR.

Want my opinion? The collapse occoured just after the cali trip, I think the Leafs got cocky with taking out 2/3 of the best teams in the League then they come back to play a mediocre team in Washington who dominated them, and once they got bit in the ass it just snowballed from there... plus it didn't help that Bernier (one of their sole reasons for being in a playoff spot) went down with a groin injury.

There was a lot of things that cost the Leafs the season, a dried up offence played a role but wasn't the main factor IMO for their demise.

Nonsense. If that is even remotely true then your team is stocked with mental midgets. I don't see that as the reason for the collapse. I think they simply got tired. Try looking into player usage by Carlyle and see if he didn't tire his stars out. This is pure speculation on my part as I haven't done the research but players getting tired at the end of the season due to overplay is far more likely than your explanation.

P84 thinks himself to be a psychologist who throws out these stupid, nonsensical cliches about why the Leafs collapsed....they didn't get cocky, they were just outright awful for 8 straight games.

I agree that high blocked shots aren't necessarily a good thing. It drives me nuts that the opponents have the puck so much. Look at it this way though, the Habs blocked 226 more shots than the Leafs. The Leafs SV% is ~.914 for the year. That means they allowed another 20 or so goals. It's crude yes but it drives the point home that weaker CORSI teams like the Habs and Leafs have to support their goalies. If the Leafs allowed 20 fewer goals I think they're in the playoffs.

Remember also, your top players did play in the Olympics. Extra games right there. I know other players did to but ice time was reduced around the league to many of those guys.

I'm thinking fatigue and shitty coaching.

I think its mostly shitty coaching, poor goaltending at the worst time, and every one of the Leafs slumping at the same time. Young group for the most part and looking pretty mentally soft when the going gets tough....a couple of "vets" would help. Dion's pretty much by himself in that regard.

I consider myself a pretty die-hard Leaf fan;

First game at the Gardens I was maybe 5, I saw the leafs beat The Golden Seals...When I was a kid on gameday, I'd get get out all my Leaf hockey cards, lay the lines out on the coffee table, then go in the corner with my baseball glove and make saves just like Palmateer.
I survived the 80's.
I snuck off from my own Jack n Jill to catch the game, made sure my wedding date wouldn't conflict...the usual Leaf-fanatic stuff.

How any Leaf fan can try to spin this season, or try to deflect the criticism into anything positive is beyond me. Of course I don't count being happy with some of the kids, I'm glad we have Rielly and Gardiner and co., but the team choked again, just like the did in the playoffs, and just like they did the year before that.

Sometimes you just have to take your lumps. This is the first time I've truly felt that the trolls actually have something to troll about, and our friends can give us the gears mercilessly, and we just have to take it.

It's okay, the winning will be all the sweeter for it.

Yeah, pretty much this. I defended these ****s tooth and nail for a long ass time, but a man can only take so much choking.

Pre-injury, post-injury. Playoff team, non-playoff team - doesn't matter. Karlsson is THE elite offensive defenseman in the league.
