GDT - Caps @ Leafs | Beginning of the post-Carlyle-era | 7:00PM EST TSN

You need both. I don't have a problem with bringing in guys like Roberts or Nieuwendyk, for example, in part because of the leadership they provide.

It's when you bring in bottom-of-the-lineup guys like Komisarek, Clarkson or Armstrong to provide leadership where you run into problems.

Precisely. It is definitely not an either/or proposition.

Today, however, it's much more difficult to land a Nieuwendyk or Roberts. They just don't hit the UFA market. We need to draft and develop these players.

The letters themselves don't really matter. You need to have the leaders in the room though.

Just because the Habs didn't name a captain, doesn't mean they don't have one. Or two, or three...

Long been reported Price is actually the captain in the room but the NHL doesn't allow goalie captains anymore.

Leadership is overrated.

I disagree. You are assuming humanity self-motivates on a whole. I don't think it does. You don't need leadership if you have 20 guys that take pride in their work and step up every shift. It is extremely rare to see that in any sports team.

Yeah. Try to accomplish anything with a group of 20 people with no leadership.

Hockey teams are no different than other industries. Strong leadership is always a benefit.

Given their talent and coaching, the team has performed at expecations the last few years. Not sure why we have to bring in any other factors to explain anything.

I'm of the opinion that with the right coach, this same group of individuals would perform much better. This first game was already proof of it, and Horachek isn't even the best choice for this group. Still, his methods work better than Carlyle's, and it started to show the first game.

Oh they absolutely would be better with better coaching.

But this team has performed at expecations for a randy coached team with this talent level.

Valuable but still overrated.

Only when it's assumed that the Captain is also the best player who can carry the entire team on his back for long stretches. A true Captain is simply a morale booster, who can lift the spirits of fellow athletes.
