Black woman, 'white' profile: Exposing racism in online dating

When Hadiya Roderique created her Tinder profile, the 36-year-old lawyer and PhD student was told she'd be "bombarded" by messages from eager men on the online dating app. She'd put together what she thought was a witty profile, accompanied by several attractive photos. It seemed like an easy way to dive back into the dating pool after leaving a relationship.

But the anticipated flood of attention was more of a trickle: five messages in three days, and one or two messages each day thereafter. Put off and suspicious that her black skin had something to do with it, Roderique slapped her white friend's photo on the same dating profile, and watched as the messages came pouring in. Then, she tried a photo of herself, digitally altered to make her appear Caucasian, and saw even more messages filling up her inbox.

The informal experiment led Roderique to a disheartening conclusion: "People aren't as open as perhaps they claim to be."

What struck me as funny in that article that one of the three profiles she tested used this picture of her that was "edited to make her appear caucasian":

...and that profile ended up being even more popular than the one featuring her white friend.

It sort of flies in the face of the point she was making, because the woman in this picture obviously isn't a white woman.

Tell that to the countless white dudes with Asian women on their arms.

People are attracted to what they are attracted to.

I have seen reports that black women and Asian men do the worst on online dating.

I believe Asian women were the most preferred.

Asian men yes because of the small penis nerd stereotype.

Black women also tend not to like white guys whereas black guys like white women.

Surely Zeke can't be arguing that not being attracted to a different race is racist. That is an absurb argument if he is making it.

The way I see it, being generally more or less attracted to people of a particular race is no different than having a preference for hair colour, body type, etc.

It's not something anyone should have to justify, as we can't really choose what we find attractive.

exactly

and acting to counteract its negative consequences.

Do your best to be good to people and don't beat yourself up over gut reaction type shit that happens inside your head when you're dealing with someone from another race, culture, etc. If you try to treat everyone well but you sub consciously treat people from your "tribe" slightly better, **** it, you're still treating people different from you well, which is better than most people get to say about their interactions with others.

Likely the real culprit.
