GDT: Game 70 | Blackhawks vs. Canadiens | Mar. 14, 2017

Pls name me #1 C who'se been traded during MBs tenure as GM, the Habs were in a position to acquire be it via trade (including having assets to acquire or willingness to waive NTC/NMC) / via UFA or the Habs passed over in the draft since 2012?
Also not MBs fault the 2012 draft did not yield a McDavid or Matthews instead of Galchenyuk.
As Friedman said last week, Subban would've likely been a Canuck had Van 1st rounder been able to draft Dubois..MB knows he needs a C

O'Reilly? Maybe not a true #1 center but definitely a solid pivot.

Not sure if Beaulieu would've been a suitable alternative to Zadorov in the Avs eyes and if the Habs had remaining components to match/willing to surrender to match Grigorenko & Compher

That's the rumor but I also read Bergevin didn't even try.
I was told by an NHL player Habs were the only team to offer Staal a 3-year deal on July1st, and he dreaded the thought of playing in Mtl.
His agent was desperate to find another suitor but able to convince Minny to match it - they were steadfast on 2-years...

I don't want to debate willingness as this is purely on MB's shoulder. I think this was a doable option, probably the only one in recent years. But as Habsy mentioned, O'Reilly was pretty greedy in his demands.

Greedy or not he is a solid option as our 2C , if 14 makes 1.5 less or clowns are making 5 as free agents no issue paying him . He has been solid in Buffalo .

We had Eller , midget , and now we have a 4.5 mil Russian pylon on D , those are cap busters not ROR .

Fair enough.

I do question whether MBs guilty of being too blinded by loyalty & if it's not bit him in the ass far too many times in his nearly 5-years as GM - both players (DD, Eller, Emelin, Plekanec) & coaching wise (Sly, MT, JJ)

Most gm`s are loyal to a fault where they will hang on til the bitter end with their players , need to be ruthless .

I don't know what is your intention? defending the GM or what? But either way Rolex asked we should be a contender with this team and i gave him the reason we aren't. My expectation from MB? Nothing. A GM who couldn't almost put under the contract any typical 20 goal scorer in July 1st or any other time(other than Radulov) since he is in charge do you expect me to ask him to find a possible no1 counterman? Too much to ask...

Been posted ad nauseam on this thread MB has acquired 20 goal scorers during his GM tenure.
As for 1C: unless ownership are ready & willing to tank (like Leafs). There is no other way to get a 1C other than top-3 draft in a good cuvée (unfortunately for Habs fans 2012 was not that cuvée)...there is no other way. This is no longer the 80's where some GM will cough up a 6'3" Bobby Smith for run of the mill top-6 winger Mark Napier. A legit 1C is the toughest position to acquire in modern day NHL.
Cue Rolex in 3...2...1

We all know it's hard to put together a Cup winner....that's why they get paid the big bucks.

Also, beyond the obvious miss like Giroux...lots of rather decent Centres available in the 2nd round. The Rangers found Dubinsky and Anisimov. Bruins found Krecji and Bergeron, etc etc

Yup - 2003, 2006 (Giroux) and 2010 (Kuznetsov) drafts were colossal 1st round misses.

we had a chance to get a gem in TJ but we took another d... albeit a blue chip d prospect, but we passed on getting a blue chip center .. mindset
