And the Captain's are.....?

I hate this move....it is just plain stupid. Unfortunately, it means Francis isn't comfortable with anyone in the locker room to step up and be that guy. I think this is more about the overall lack of "the guy" in the locker room versus Francis making a dumb decision. I think he was forced into this as going another year with no C and 3 A's sends an even worse message.

I am holding onto my Tavares dream as long as possible to fix these problems. He turns this roster into a top half playoff team in the East.....hopefully he can see that and the new ownership is ready to open the checkbook this off-season.

I thought I was the only one who wanted that. But then again I want World peace and the ability to digest wheat.

I truly believe we are building a team that someone like like Tavares could step into a make a serious contender. We have alot of the pieces to be competitive for many years. All we need is a star.

Glad to see I'm not the only one with a Tavares dream...

I put the chances of Tavares leaving the NYI at about 10%. As much as I would love to see him as our 1st line Center, if Tavares is going hit the open market, he's going to end up somewhere other than Carolina I suspect.

If you want to live the dream, consider this. Tavares in the open market is probably good for, lets say, $10 million per AAV. Pesce and Slavin's new deals up their cap cost about $7.5 million. Give Lindholm a great season this year (55 points) and he is making $4.5 million (that is another $1.8 million increase). TVR goes to $3 million ($2 million increase) and finally Hanifin gets $5 million ($4 million increase).

Meanwhile Derek Ryan, Lee Stempniak, Josh Jooris and Cam Ward are let go. Cam is replaced by one of our kids (decrease in cap hit $2 million). Stempniak, Ryan, and Jooris are gone ($5 million cap hit) and replaced by some $1 million per guys (2) and John Tavares.

Ok, so what did we just do?

Current cap hit with the roster we have RIGHT NOW: $60.5 million

We have added: $7.5 million + $6 million just on D ($13.5 million). $1.8 million (Lindholm) and $10 million (Tavares) and $2 million (2 cheap replacements at forward) and $1 million (kid goalie). $28.3 million

We have removed: $8 million (Stempniak, Ryan, Jooris, Cam Ward). Net that out? We increase our cap hit $20 million. That likely puts us over the cap next season.

Now of course you can argue that if given the opportunity to sign Tavares, we would get rid of other players to reduce payroll (ie Rask). But my point is that NEXT season, if you want to keep our D together, that alone is going to potentially spike our payroll/cap hit by $13.5 million, which is a huge payroll/cap increase.

Something is going to need to give next season with our 6 Dmen we have right now just to avoid having us be a $70 million team. We would have to lose a lot to add Tavares to our roster. Not saying that it COULDN'T happen....but its actually not a simple matter of signing the guy....we are going to be a big spending team next season (unless we make a lot of trades).

Truth is, no one knows why they went this ridiculous route. But plenty of people sure think they do!

There's another problem with having co-captains. How do you now go to a single captain without upsetting two guys. Seems to me we are stuck with the Staal-Faulk duo for the foreseeable for future. This not only a dumb move, but one which will be extremely hard to undo.

Now there you go with logic and reason!

I don't think we will ever sign Tavares. I didn't think we would ever win a cup either.

But thanks for the money breakdown. Your analysis is one of the reasons this is one of the better boards. If only a certain blowhard would just go post on the hurricanes.com board...

I never said it was realistic....it is just my dream. You dream crusher you.... :)

That said, I think it is going to take a lot more than $10M per year AAV to sign Tavares. He is a top 5 center in this league. For my dream to have any hope a couple things have to happen.

1) Canes have new ownership and they decide to try out being a MAX cap team to win, with logic that attendance will follow.
2) Canes have to dump a higher priced D-man and count on the youth they have built up. They are trending toward too much money invested in the D and a likely candidate would be Faulk traded assuming Bean or Fleury are ready for next year for a more prominent role. That also fixes your Captain issue, as I don't see Jordan having an issue conceding the C to Tavares.

I think Tavares wants to leave the Island...or he would have re-signed by now. Money has not been the issue. They are pretty much a team without a long term arena or location and why should he waste his final prime years in limbo....no new arena is on the horizon. On the positive side the Canes have as much Cap room and likely more than most other landing places. He also makes this team a legitimate contender if he wants to win. The real main obstacle is does Carolina want to be a max cap team? Though unlikely, you have to ask new ownership what is the point of buying a franchise if you don't want to win? Owning teams are all about stroking egos and what a better way to make a statement to the league?
