OT: American Politics

Frank Rich gets it: “Despite her embrace of the socialist label, there is nothing radical about what Ocasio-Cortez ran on — government-funded higher education, Medicare for all, abolishing ICE. These are solid Democratic positions” h/t ⁦@bnwlfsn⁩ nymag.com/daily/intellig…

This is true from @frankrichny. As a European transplanted in DC, I agree with Noam Chomsky who told me in 2016 that the Sanders wing of the Dems isn’t socialist, it’s solidly New Deal liberal & not that radical. It just feels radical because politics is so right-wing right now.

Odd. When I tried to show how libertarians aren't about dismantling all aspects of government you said that wasn't real libertarianism.

I guess I can say this isn't real Socialism.

America is simply going to continue creating voids which China and Russia will simply continue to fill.

I don't think Russia has the economic ability to fill any gaps anywhere really. China though.....

Amazing to watch Americas influence around the globe drop at this rate. What is a comparison to this, the roman empire? Ottoman empire?

Both of which took hundred of years, america is doing it in 5-10

There will be ebbs and flows, this isn't the "end" perse. I think when historians look back at this though, the Trump admin will be seen as the tipping point towards Chinese dominance.

Political, Economic, Military, Russia can step into 2 of those 3. China can step into all.

Most countries play the long game. Influence and advantages lost now cannot simply be made up under a new president, if American even decides to elect a new one in 2020. Europe looking to set trade practices with China cannot simply be undone.

Europe looking to make a pan European military organization cannot simply be undone.

Countries looking to invest long term choosing countries other than american cannot simply be undone

I disagree entirely. I think Russia's political influence is limited to shit disturbing and that liberal democracies will shut down their ability to undercut shortly. I don't really see that as political influence though, not in any sort of meaningful geopolitical sense. Militarily they barely have the ability to project beyond their own borders. Their reasons for wanting NATO gone is because NATO keeps them from projecting power on their borders the way that they want, because that is really their only theatre of power projection.

Russia can play the part of professional troll and shit disturber for now until the west makes the appropriate steps to stomp out their current methods, but an economy that weak just can't do much beyond it's own borders on any front.

Yep.

Someone tell me how it’ll be paid for?

Same way other countries do it I'd imagine. If shithole countries can do it, I'd imagine a superpower like the US could no?

Just my own theory here... The savings on what Americans pay into insurance is more than cover the taxes. The people who don't currently have insurance would "pay more" cause their taxes would go up... but it would be well worth it for them.

I don't know how much money insurance companies make in the US per year... but sinking that money back into the system instead of insurance conglomerates coffers has to be better for the system imo.

Prison reform could save the country a lot of money. Abolish ICE? Sounds like savings.

As for the other stuff... higher taxes I guess. Some thing it's worth it for a "higher quality of life." And some will hate it.
