Political Correctness

Re: **William Nylander signs for 6 years, per Dreger**

I thank you both, and Ray, from the bottom of me heart. People just don't get that the more normalized it is, the more likely kids are going to use it. I shudder to think I'm going to have to explain to my sweet child what the word means and why he was called it.

:cheers2:

Things are getting better. There will always be *******s, but if we can prevent the good people from unknowingly being *******s it will make a huge difference.

Re: **William Nylander signs for 6 years, per Dreger**

Ditto.

I didn't use it to refer to anyone with a disability so I thought it was all cool and I was being adequately sensitive. Thanks to Babe, I realized that I was still being inappropriate.

I've become fairly PC over the years. I used to think that people were too sensitive and they needed to "grow a pair" or "pull up their panties." Then one day I realized that I don't get to decide how people feel about the words I say. Now I guess if I'm okay offending people, then I'll say whatever I want and too bad for them. That's my prerogative. However, if I want to show people the respect that I expect, then I should avoid offending people if possible. That said, it's going to happen, cause you just never know what could offend someone who's hypersensitive. I just avoid things that I know offend a lot of people.

Similar trajectory....but it was a discussion on here with BL 3-4+ years ago on the use of the R word, that ultimately changed my mind.

My perspective on using that, or "gay" to mean lame has altered from a "I don't mean anything offensive by it" type stance to a more Seinfeld type "I'm not offended as a Jewish person, I'm offended as a comedian."....specifically how low effort being ironic/meta/edgelord using those phrases are, and I try to lean in to calling people out if they use them/mocking them for their low effort attempts to be funny.

Re: **William Nylander signs for 6 years, per Dreger**

I’d imagine this is how languages evolve. We speak differently than just 100 years ago, in another 100 years it’ll likely be different again.

Good point. Political correctness and immigration are probably two of the biggest factors in the evolution of language.

Political correctness is okay in my mind, until the point it starts going ****ing overboard.

Baby its cold outside is a rape song.

https://nationalpost.com/news/canad...ves-its-sudden-banishment-from-canadian-radio

In 2004, the National Post published a tongue-in-cheek article arguing that Baby It’s Cold Outside should be immediately banned from Canadian airwaves.

“Baby, It’s Cold Outside has a lovely melody but it’s an ode to statutory rape,” read the December 20, 2004 story. “In sum, the man gets the girl drunk amid her protestations so he can take advantage of her.”

Fourteen years later our throwaway joke has become reality. On Tuesday, the CBC, along with the country’s two largest commercial radio operators, Bell Media and Rogers, announced they would be pulling the “controversial” song from their rotation.

Come on!

Looking at the lyrics it sure looks like a date rape song.

The explanation posted actually makes some sense... but it's a little rapey at least.

For contemporary society. Heck males used to club females and do whatever they wanted. Evolution is slow. Women are still treated as property in many countries today.

in the 1940s, as it was stated in the article, the context is the woman is not afraid of the man, of being raped, or pressured into sex.

The woman is afraid of what society will think of her for staying the night and having sex. The weather, the drink being used as reasons to explain why she would stay the night is not rapey.

Context is important.

The song fits the era and was a sign of the times. If released today it doesnt see the light of day due to the content so I get the issue with it

My issue was the original outrage with the lyrics was for the wrong reasons and people just piled on without doing research

Watching any raunchy comedy from circa 1980s is very cringe inducing. I think it was the Witches of Eastwick that was just on over the Halloween season and I got about 30 minutes of it. Whatever this PC stuff is, it was certainly needed.

Shit produced today has cringe wworthy content. We just seem to have become desensitized to most of it

But when it's being played on the radio there's no context... just the lyrics. They are being listened to by people now.

eh, I'm not a huge fan of moralizing over artistic expression.

that is a different topic of debate though.

but if we're taking Baby Its Cold Outside off the radio, there should be another several dozen songs that go with it.

People should post lyrics of some of these rap songs.

Married with Children and All in the Family still run in regular rotation and those are probably some of the most cringe worthy shows on TV in relation to today's climate

Like I said if you are going to start shelving songs and shows because there is some offensive material in it then there wont be much content left
